Research "The Global Fan": Major Global Leagues and Teams and Insights into the Global Football Fandom

A recent study titled The Global Fan was published about football fans worldwide. ?It was conducted by the company Chiliz , the creators of the fan tokens on the platform Socios.com.

The material provides data about teams and leagues, as well as several insights into the mindset of today's football fans.

The research surveyed 8,000 people from different countries: the UK, USA, Brazil, Italy, Turkey, Nigeria, Japan, and South Korea.

Teams and Leagues with the Most Fans

As other studies, Real Madrid FC and FC Barcelona lead as the teams with the most global fans, despite the Premier League having the highest viewership and interest.

Team Preference- Global

The ranking continues with English teams: Manchester United is in third place, followed by Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City, and Liverpool.

Bayern Munich is the first non-English team on the list.

A remarkable performance by Argentina's Boca Juniors, which ranks 16th, and Brazil’s Santos, in 20th. These are the only two teams from outside Europe on the list.

Global Football Fandom

The study shows that 33% of fans support a foreign team as their primary club.

Among young people aged 18-35, the preference for foreign clubs is significantly higher than the average, reaching 59%. This trend is especially evident among Millennials.

For fans aged +45 y.o. the interest drops to 13%.

Even in countries with strong domestic leagues, this phenomenon is noticeable. UK is the country with the least number of fans supporting teams from other countries.

Tottenham in South Korea: The Power of an Idol

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is an important team globally, but remains distant from its English rivals. However, the Chiliz survey revealed that a single idol can change everything.

Tottenham doesn't appear among the top teams in any market. But in South Korea, it is the absolute leader.

This is all thanks to the presence of Son Heung-min, the South Korean forward, who is a national hero and the greatest football idol in the country.

Insights from the Fandom

A particularly interesting part of the research was hearing about fan behavior and desires.

Watching highlights, accessing social media, and tracking results rank ahead of watching live matches.

Memberships account for 12%, while 47% prefer watching highlights.

Attending games in person only accounts for 18%, while 43% are engaged on social media.
