The Research-Driven, Road-Tested Framework That Will Help You Make Real Progress
The Book
Today I’m thrilled to officially share news about my upcoming book, Job Moves: 9 Steps for Making Progress in Your Career .
I wrote this book with Ethan Bernstein and Bob Moesta to offer a road-tested framework for career development that helps anyone make real progress on teir path when they switch jobs.
Based on extensive research conducted with over a thousand professionals at all stages of their careers, we found that no matter your age, stage, or trajectory, the right job is one that makes progress in your life and career journey.?But how do we make the right move?
Job Moves lays out a process to help individuals identify the current circumstances driving them to look for new opportunities, the experiences they hope to gain in a new job, what tradeoffs they’ll gladly make in return, and how to learn-before-switching if a new job will deliver.?
The result encourages job seekers to look beyond a title or company for a more holistic view and ask not what you can do in a job, but what a potential job can do for you.
Harper Business will release the book on November 19th, 2024.
But here’s the good news: You can start reading it right now, as we’ve made the introduction available on the website .
We’re currently booking speaking engagements, workshops, trainings, and events for the fall to bring the book to more people and help employers develop and retain their own talent in-house long-term. If that’s you, please reach out !

There will be so much more to share throughout this process, but I’m too excited to hold back this amazing reaction from Reed Hastings, co-founder and executive chairman of Netflix and New York Times bestselling author:
"Job Moves is packed with stuff I wish I had understood 40 years ago. Follow these 9 steps to shape your thinking, take your next step, and sculpt the career you want."

The Background
Rather than close there, I am so excited about this book that I have one other thing to share: a bit more background as to how it came about… so here’s where this book fits into my own Job Moves.
When my mentor Clay Christensen passed away in January of 2020, I sought comfort in the company of the strong network of Clay's mentees, former employees, friends, and more. And in short order, I began a collaboration with two of his mentees—Bob of Jobs to Be Done fame and Ethan from the Harvard Business School, who are also dear friends.?
That collaboration in the midst of the upheaval of the COVID pandemic was to take what we were learning about why people quit their jobs to help individuals make real progress in their careers. And what we began landing on were a set of insights that I started using on myself—from when I said no to an offer to be a president of a new university to when I left Guild full-time to focus on my writing, speaking, and podcasting.
As longtime readers of my newsletter know, career outcomes is also something I've become more and more concerned with over the years as it pertains to the value of one’s education. If we’re being serious about ensuring that all individuals can live lives of dignity and purpose, then doing academics better isn’t enough.
All of which led to this book.
My mission is to give everyone that roadmap to a better, brighter future—and Job Moves is the next step. I hope you’ll support my co-authors and me in creating the biggest impact and widest reach to help the most people possible. Thank you.
