Rescued Dorm Beds Help Furnish Special Dengue Care Ward

Honduras has been grappling with a significant dengue outbreak in recent years, with cases rising sharply, particularly in 2023 and 2024. The epidemic is largely driven by the spread of the Aedes mosquito, which transmits the virus, exacerbated by heavy rains and poor sanitation, leading to increased public health concerns and pressure on the healthcare system. Patients have symptoms like high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding. Severe cases can be life-threatening without prompt medical attention.

In response, Global Links provided the furniture and supplies needed to set up a special dengue care ward, such as dorm beds salvaged from the University of Pittsburgh in 2024. It also included 72,000 single packets of oral rehydration salts, which are key to caring for patients with dengue.
