Rerun: The innovations of open source

It is the first week of teaching, and as a German saying goes, "I'm rotating." (Too many work threads all vying for immediate attention.) Hence, another favorite evergreen this time, the innovations of open source.
In this 2019 article from the pre-COVID times (how far away now) I discuss the innovations that open source has brought to software development specifically and to the world in general. I'm not talking about specific projects like the Linux kernel, but more broadly about legal innovation, collaboration innovation, and business innovation. Open source is ripe in all of them.
