RERA is roaring with dispute resolutions

A JLL India study of Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs data has revealed that the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) has resolved over 1 lakh cases of homebuyers’ disputes across 27 states and 8 union territories in the last five years.

Some states have also addressed the needs of homebuyers through prompt measures like dispute resolution, ease of information access, and reconciliation councils. A key pillar of the RERA regulation, grievance redressal, has been very effective, the report contends. The cumulative number of cases disposed are 106,428 as of January 2023, moving up from 18,543 in June 2019.?

• Uttar Pradesh accounted for the largest share of dispute resolution (40%) while Maharashtra commands the largest share of project registration at 39%, given the bustling Mumbai Metropolitan Region comprising Thane, Navi Mumbai and suburban areas, apart from homebuyer favoured cities like Pune, Nagpur and Nashik
• Tamil Nadu has taken the second place with 13% share, thanks to cities of Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai
• Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot have made Gujarat the third largest in registrations with a 11% share
