Requiem For Mike O.

Some are banned and no one knows why. Whatever you do- if a troll attacks you? Walk away. Even if you have the perfect retort they can report you and claimed they feel "Bullied" regardless of the misery they wrought to others.

This is not a democracy. There are women who file harassment complaints which LinkedIn feels were not harassment. There is no paper explaining how they came to that decision.

It's arbitrary. Someone with over thirty thousand followers was derailed by a couple complaints. Occasionally Mike liked statuses that brought political nonsense to my feed. The good outweighed the bad.

There was a lot to him. He fought Mixed Martial Arts, moved from Chicago and back again, built The Service Professionals Network and cultivated positivity, not toxic positivity. The toxically positive are allowed to maintain their accounts.

I never liked the phrase "Content Creator". Not hearing it before Microsoft purchased LinkedIn- some acted like their ideas were more important than someone else's. My ideas are mine, your ideas are yours. Bring on the exchange of ideas. Such is the impetus of communication.

The fact that someone can have years of effort and cultivating many relationships erased because of anonymous complaints seems like the antithesis of social media. I told Mr. O'Connor he might still have a business page and somehow those are not banned.

If someone who aspires for "Win Win" scenarios can be banned what hope is there for anyone? His twin brother has an account. There is little stopping him from making like The Parent Trap and posting from Patrick's account. Do they have twin telepathy? I have heard of that and have not seen evidence although it's an interesting concept.

Mike is still on Facebook. Probably Twitter and of course, SPN. This is not goodbye. If a movie is made of this strange saga, Vince Vaughn could play him. I could see that. Hide behind eight hundred fifty million accounts. Those large numbers are nothing compared to the ones who rose up and were cut down. Before long every post will be boring and generic.

One of my long term connections of over a decade disappeared suddenly in similar circumstances, along with her carefullly-cultivated network and long-standing groups. LI won't say why, for privacy reasons. I managed to get them to suggest that only serious ToU/UA breaches result in permanent bans (implying that they discovered something else beyond anonymous user reported content - which, they say, usually results in milder sanctions such as shadow banning, content deletion or temporary suspensions). That said, no truly fair justice system fails to notify suspects of their alleged infractions nor to allow them an opportunity to challenge them, let alone go so far as permanent ostracization. As you said, thankfully alternatives exist and perhaps the best insurance policy is to follow Donna-Luisa Eversley's, or Mike O's examples and set up your own parallel community offsite.

As someone whose account on the platform dates back to circa 2005, but admittedly wasn't all that active the first few years, I've seen quite a bit of evolution over time. There was always something of a "cool club" of early adopters who were active, or willing to invest time and energy into trying to raise their profiles (remember Q&A anyone? Or the introduction of video and the awkward "walk and talk" amateur hour that followed?) What never seems to change is the recycling of memes, well-hashed and stale ideas, and "thought leadership" that isn't remotely original, yet is pitched, sometimes I think by well-meaning people who ironically fail to understand that what they are saying has appeared in feeds for YEARS and doesn't really move the needle. With the right selfie attached, however, it becomes "a really insightful posting," never mind the appropriateness (or not) of the accompanying flirtation or really superficial "engagement" from those seeking approval or acknowledgement from the poster. I'm not a believer in telling people "how they should" make use of the platform, but for every starry-eyed guru and would-be social media messiah that emerges, there's a never ending supply waiting in the wings.

Thomas Jackson very well said. Thankfully I follow him on fb also. There are a few people I connected with here and suddenly they can't be found. The stratisphere jailhouse is becomming a community. Thankfully, I have my paralel space at donnaluisa.com , seeing too much of these unsolved mysteries.
