Request for Information: Diagramming tool

I am looking for a diagramming tool for use on my current team doing software design, system architecture, user interface sketches and similar.

I expect that there is just the whizz-bang tool out there that a lot of people are using. Please let me know what you think.

I like Diagrams.Net but am wondering if there are other similar/better choices.

Requirements

  • non-paid licence. Ideally open source. I would consider "free as in beer" too.
  • capabilities must include (i) basic boxes and arrows, (ii) UML 2.x, (iii) Entity Relationship diagrams for relational data
  • performance - lightweight to run
  • storage - text (as opposed to binary) so that I can store diagram revisions close to source code in Git (as opposed to SharePoint-ish)
  • multi-platform. I have team members using Windows 10, Mac OS X (not at 11.x yet), Ubuntu (assume other *nix systems).
  • collaborative diagramming. A nice bonus would be the ability to have multiple people simultaneously edit the same diagram.

Candidates

  • Diagrams.Net (also known as draw.io)
  • this is where you come in. Are there other tools like diagrams.net that fit my requirements?

I like lucidchart a lot and find it very user-friendly for all levels of team members.

I have used LucidCharts and am very pleased. There is a Mac and Microsoft version so be clear on what platform you will be working on.

Some additional ideas that have come in include PlantUML, Gliffy, Miro, LucidCharts. Also of interest to system architects who speak Archimate --> Architool. More to come...

Hi James, HNY to you. 1) YED, link https://www.yworks.com/products/yed is another one, with some need auto-layout feature. I will keep an eye on this space as I am always looking at better open-source tools myself. 2) Google Draw (it's not that good to be honest) but free!
