Request Book Publishing Advice!

With Almighty’s blessings I have nearly completed my first book on ‘Transforming Insurance Business:  A Practitioner’s Handbook’.

The book gives an ‘in the trenches’ and 30,000 foot view of practical dilemmas/challenges faced in running an insurance company in today’s hyper competitive environment and creative solutions to overcome them. The coverage is wide ranging from strategy formulation, business/operating models, execution, innovation, marketing, sales, IT,HR, UW, Claims etc. The book focuses more on the ‘strategic’ aspects of life/general insurance business (both in start up and mature phase) and relatively less on the insurance technicalities. The lessons will thus be useful for professionals from other financial services (FS) firms also like banks etc.

Book is purely from a seasoned practitioner’s perspective having worked in insurance companies both in private/public sector and having consulted to insurers for more than 20 years.

Book is primarily intended for CXO/senior/middle/junior insurance industry professionals including other financial services (FS) professionals. Business Consultants associated with the FS industry will also find it highly useful. It will also be useful for foreign insurers who are looking to enter developing markets or expanding operations in those markets.

I am now looking for a reputed publisher who can distribute the books widely across various markets.

The self online publishing option has been recommended and looks promising.

It would be good if there could be a hard copy version of the book as well which may not be feasible through ‘self online’ option. I am not sure about this though!

I would appreciate if names/addresses/contacts of good publishers can be suggested. Any additional tips/leads or on the financial part would be highly welcome. My email id is [email protected]   mobile +91-9811316814.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rajiv Many congratulations on the book! Our new book "Patterns of Strategy" comes out today with Gower, now part of the Taylor & Francis group and its been a long struggle, so I appreciate just how much work you must have put into it. We seriously considered doing self publish for this latest book and the reason we went with a conventioanl publisher is because for some audiences its still seen as a mark of respectability, that this is a serious book that they can take seriously. A publisher has to invest a significant amount of time and money into producing a book so potential buyers know that the publisher has considered it good enough to take a risk on. Also, generally the quality of the physical product is better, the quality of the design, layout etc tends to be better. BUT, if we hadn't needed that veneer of respectability for some markets, I think we would have gone for self publishing and I'm sure it would have been significantly faster. A couple of people I know have just done this, the physical results are pretty good, if you want colour diagrams you can do it easily in self-publishing (this is much harder with conventional publishing because it pushes their costs up, which increases their risk) and the author gets a much higher % of the income. I don't know the best firms for self-publish, but certainly its possible to do hard-copy paperbacks and e-copy. The quality is getting better year on year. Hope that helps and best of luck with it! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Patterns-Strategy-Patrick-Hoverstadt/dp/1138242675/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8
