Repurposing Local Materials into Vibrant Public Art: Unveiling Rosebery Engine Yards' New Sculpture

Repurposing materials to create artwork is a powerful statement of sustainability and innovation. Adaptive reuse goes beyond simple recycling, embodying a strong commitment to sustainability. By repurposing existing materials, artists reduce waste and integrate historical continuity into contemporary settings. This movement in architecture and design is recognised for its environmental benefits and ability to preserve and reimagine cultural heritage.

Patrizia Biondi's latest public artwork, "Timber Tapestries - Stories Carved in Grain," captures Rosebery’s industrial past through intricate design and repurposed timber from construction sites. This artwork, consisting of multiple unique overlapping lengths of coloured timber, has been installed in collaboration with Goodman, Studio Elliot, Caroline Comino, Taylor Construction, and Group GSA. Each reclaimed piece provides historical continuity, bridging the past and present. The aesthetic configuration layers materials in various arrangements, narrating Rosebery's evolving history.

Really loved working on the delivery of this one. Timber in public art doesn’t get used enough. Also shout out to Samuel Marshall Tim Kennard for great steel and install (and letting us re-purpose a massive steel post they had in the yard). Big thanks @patriziabiondi, Art Pharmacy and of course Ben Muir for your excellent design work. Truly sustainable and hand crafted by all involved.

It's such an exciting project! Big hooray!
