A pair of Republican leaders of Congress's main tax-writing committee are criticizing the fairness of an upcoming IRS study on the possibility of setting up its own free tax-filing system that would compete with the commercial tax software industry.

So many problems with the idea of this. If it doesn’t include state returns how many preparers would be willing to only prep state returns? Will it run a filing status optimization to determine what is more beneficial? I can’t imagine the system will be sophisticated enough to handle returns that aren’t already available to be a free return on HR block, Turbo Tax, or other similar softwares. Seems to me to be a waste of a 15 million dollar study.

This Republican does not but they should be upfront and warn this is only Federal they have to pay to do the State return.
