"I know, indeed, that some honest men fear that a republican government can not be strong; that this government is not strong enough. But would the honest patriot, in the full tide of successful experiment, abandon a government which has so far kept us free and firm, on the the theoretic and visionary fear that this government, the world's best hope, may by possibility want energy to preserve itself? I trust not. I believe this, on the contrary, to the strongest government earth." Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1801.
Today, the electors of the electoral college cast their votes, and Donald J. Trump was elected our next President. This election has been nothing if not contentious. Despite the dire predictions of some, our republic will survive. The protests, critiques, opinion pieces, radio commentaries, and other expressions of opposition - and support - reveal the truth of Jefferson's observation that a free republic is the strongest form of government on earth. Compare it to what is going on in Syria, ISIS, North Korea, and other oppressive regimes today. As other Founders observed, we have the worst system of government - until you compare with all the others. Long live the republic.
