Republic Day of India 2023 – Parade, Tribal Dance, Beating Retreat, Drone Show
Republic Day of India is one of three Indian national holidays. It celebrates the enactment of the constitution of India that occurred on January 26, 1950. Our nation achieved independence from the British on August 15, 1947 (it is celebrated as a separate national holiday of India). But for its first 3 years, India remained governed mostly by the colonial Government of India Act of 1935.
Background
When India became independent of the United Kingdom, that time India did not have a permanent constitution. On November 4, 1947, the drafting committee presented the constitution's first draft to the national assembly. The final English and Hindi language versions of the constitution were signed by the national assembly on January 24, 1950.
Shortly, just after independence was announced, a constituent assembly of India elected by all provincial assemblies went about drafting a constitution. It would govern the freshly independent nation. Two years later, India’s constitution was fully completed and hardens the full establishment of India’s independent democratic government. It was chosen on January 26 as the date of official enactment as a nod to the complete self-rule (Purna Swaraj). It was an announcement of independence by the Indian National Congress in 1930. It was considered the first solid step toward independence from Britain.
With the constitution of 1950, India was officially known as the Republic of India. That means “secures all its citizens’ equality, justice, fraternity, and liberty” or “sovereign socialist secular democratic republic” according to its preamble.
