Replacing Worry Talk

When I was starting as a coach, I had one of my best chemistry sessions with a client. She started crying as she realized a limiting belief she had been carrying for so long. At the end of the session, tears were replaced with a smile and excitement about new things to come. It felt like we had a breakthrough.
However, days later, I received a message that she would not pursue coaching because it was not one of her priorities. I thanked her for her time and wished her well. I was extremely disappointed, as I really wanted to see through the transformation she would be going through. I felt like a failure.
As coaches, we are not immune to our own limiting beliefs. At that moment, it felt like it confirmed one of my limiting beliefs, why I hesitated to pursue coaching in the first place – many people don't prioritize personal development in their budget. People will allocate for travel, clothes, and night outs as they see this contributing to their mental health. I fully support prioritizing joy and happiness, but personal development can also contribute to this.
Thankfully, I was already equipped with awareness on how to overcome this: reframing my mindset.
I saw this as an opportunity rather than a roadblock.
It's easy to say I am in a challenging industry, especially someone new. However, I've come to appreciate that I have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. Instead of succumbing to the notion that people don't care about personal development, I reframed it with the empowering phrase, "And that's why I'm here." This shift in mindset helps me persevere to position coaching as a beacon of positive change in the lives of those who may not yet realize its value. I replaced my worries with a positive outlook.
There is science behind replacing worry-talk with positive thoughts. There was a study done to demonstrate the power of positive thinking to people with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Read the study here . But if you’re here for some practical tips, of course I’m going to provide some.
Tips for Cultivating a Positive Mindset
Reframe Negative Thoughts: When faced with challenges, consciously reframe negative thoughts. Find the silver lining or the opportunity for growth in every situation.
Practice Gratitude: Dedicate time each day to reflect on the positive aspects of your life. Gratitude can shift your focus from what's lacking to what you already have.
Affirmations: Start your day with positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your strengths, goals, and the positive impact you can have on yourself and others.
