The Replacement Offer
This week began with one job. I am not necessarily looking for other opportunities. One company called on Monday. More on that next time. En route to the interview I was given a very good lead.
Recruiters don't work this well. Of course I never approached a recruiter and on this site recruiters are either very good (Kristina Evans) or very bad (they know who they are).
Hearing about a building inspector position- it is part-time and pays double. I did not say "I don't wake up for less than ten thousand per day". Linda Evangelista said that as models have a different pay scale. I would, however, sacrifice my afternoon nap for a position where I receive training and delegate any heavy work.
Making the call I was transferred to a line that rang once and eventually I was disconnected. With an offer for a position that I have mastered and given the opportunity to spread my wings I decided to keep this one on file for now.
The next day I saw the driver who referred me. He was told I hung up. If there were an opportunity to leave a message I would have. I was told that position was filled. There were porter opportunities available.
That might be a good place to start. It is not what I expected. This was no bait and switch. The definitive bait and switch came from a chain restaurant. They started in Texas creating the illusion of Australia. Applying for a host position the hiring agent looked me over and said "That position was filled. Would you like to be a bus boy?"
There was no offer. Applying to cultivate a positive first impression only to end up cleaning up a half eaten potato skin that became a makeshift ashtray (this was a long time ago) was one of the more insulting experiences on a job search.
Lucky for me the job I found in that cycle of broken dreams (a job search occupies the penthouse on The Boulevard of Broken Dreams) was the position I had. Hours were cut in the slow period and I worked well enough to receive the forty hours I wanted all along. Some things work out.
In the future I might look into that position, the building engineer. For now I have one job with another one on the way.
