Repeat after me...I don't like ice cream!

Recently I was talking to a client who was going on their first cruise and they were saying how worried they were about 24-hour food?I understand this worry because before I went on my first cruise I also worried about this, because I find it difficult to stop eating (See: I don't have an off switch ). When I arrived onto what was, in effect, a floating city with food everywhere and constant, I was overwhelmed. I realised I had to get my head round this and make a plan, so I could relax and enjoy all the rest of this wonderful experience.

On this cruise there were two things that were 24-hour (apart from room service) one was pizza and the other ice cream. Strangely, pizza didn’t tempt me, don’t know why. All I can say is the human mind is a strange thing. Ice cream, on the other hand, was much more problematic, I really like small amounts of ice cream and can eat small amounts of ice cream at almost any time of the day and night.

I started to work on a plan. This was made easier by some people I met who seemed to never stop eating. Vast plates of food being hoovered up—and that’s not being judgemental—it’s that piles of food make me a bit queasy. I like a full plate but not a piled plate. One person said that they ate all the time because “The more I eat the less this cruise is costing me!”. People would order two or three starters, especially the case if lobster was on the menu. I was fine with mealtimes and included in my plan 2 afternoon teas. (I actually only had one, the scones were not up to scratch in my opinion I’m a bit of a scone snob).

This still left the ice cream issue. So, I started to tell myself I didn’t like ice cream. Partly, this was helped because they only served ‘large’, even if you asked them for a small amount. I began to realise that what I really like is ice cream cones. I would ask my beloved to get me a cone, then I couldn’t weaken, and I could savour it because it was sweet and not nearly as messy as an ice cream. (I’m in awe of people who can eat an ice cream in a cone without ending up wearing some of the ice cream).

I discussed all this with my client, and she has gone off to enjoy her first cruise with some ideas about how to enjoy herself whilst making good decisions and being kind to herself whatever happens. I’m looking forward to hearing all about it when she gets back and, if necessary, helping her to get back on track.
