From 20th to 29th July 2024, I had the privilege of participating in RE.PEAT 2024, a regional expedition organized by PM.Haze to immerse participants in the intricate and essential world of peatlands. This program wasn’t just about education—it was about hands-on experiences, meaningful connections, and discovering actionable solutions to pressing environmental challenges.
What Did We Do?
Guided by the Global Environment Centre (GEC) and the inspiring Sahabat Gambut Asli Temuan (SGAT) community, we explored Balai Informasi Budaya Temuan and gained firsthand insights into their conservation and rehabilitation efforts. The visit included stops at the handicraft kiosk, and the communal vegetable plot of Kg Pulau Kempas, highlighting the critical role of the Orang Asli in preserving this vital ecosystem and preventing peatland fires.
Also guided by the Global Environment Centre (GEC), we visited the RMFR, where we had the incredible opportunity to join a tree-planting activity on-site. This hands-on experience not only allowed us to contribute directly to the rehabilitation efforts but also deepened our understanding of peatland restoration techniques. With GEC’s guidance, we learned about the challenges of managing degraded peatlands and the innovative strategies employed to revive these critical ecosystems.
At SD Guthrie Berhad plantations and mills, we explored sustainable palm oil practices. Highlights included the Palm Oil Experience Center, a fascinating field demonstration, and a tour of the Plantation Museum, all of which showcased the industry's strides toward sustainability.
Discussions with Dr. Helena Varkkey delved into haze governance, land protection policies, and regional solutions. Additionally, conversations with advocates like Greenpeace Southeast Asia’s, Heng Kiah Chun and CERAH Malaysia’s, Dennis, illuminated the collaborative efforts needed to address transboundary environmental issues effectively.
In Kampar, Perak, our visit to Wild Asia provided a deep dive into the practices of sustainable oil palm cultivation. From regenerative agriculture to hands-on activities such as BIO fertilizer production, farm mapping, and monitoring, this segment highlighted the innovative techniques shaping sustainable agricultural practices.

Key Takeaways
As I reflect on this experience, I realize that it’s not just about the science. For me, it’s about connecting with other eco-warriors who share the same passion for saving the planet. Building a community of like-minded people is just as important as the technical knowledge.
I also saw this camp as a chance to level up—taking on new challenges, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and growing both personally and professionally. These 10 days were not just an expedition but a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

Looking back on this journey, it’s been about so much more than just learning—it’s about connecting with the land, the people, and the shared purpose of protecting our planet. Planting trees at RMFR, engaging with local communities, and diving into sustainable agriculture practices were unforgettable experiences. Each small action we take contributes to a larger effort for a better, more sustainable future.
Sharing this journey with incredible individuals from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore made it even more special. To my friends from across the region, I hope you enjoyed the beauty and warmth of Malaysia as much as I enjoyed learning and growing alongside you. Thank you for the conversations, the laughter, and the inspiration.??
To those reading this, let’s keep the momentum going. Whether it’s peatlands, oceans, or forests, the planet needs all of us to step up in our own ways. Together, we can make a difference.
Here’s to more adventures, more learning, and more ways to protect the world we call home.
