The Reopening of Bukit Timah Railway Station

Yesterday, 1 July 2022 marked the 11th Anniversary of the return of the railway land from Malaysia to Singapore.?

In time to come, the story of how a sliver of Malaysian land used to run all the way from the Woodlands Causeway to Tanjong Pagar in the city will be told to disbelieving kids. But fact is often stranger than fiction.??

This is the former Bukit Timah Railway Station, the last of the suburban railway stations still standing today (there was also Cluny Road and Holland Road Stations).?

Constructed in 1932, the railway station at Bukit Timah was modelled after small town English railway stations and was a petite one storey affair.?

When Malaysia and the KTM handed the railway land back to Singapore on 1 July 2011, Bukit Timah Station was included in the package as well.?

In that same year, the Station was gazetted by the?Urban Redevelopment Authority?as a conserved building.?

Yesterday, exactly eleven years after the handover and after two years of restoration work, Bukit Timah Railway Station was once again open to the public who can use it as a rest stop along the Rail Corridor now managed by?NParks.?

National Development?Minister Desmond Lee?hosted friends and colleagues yesterday morning at the station's reopening and also met with various stakeholders.?

Besides the station, the former railway staff quarters has also been conserved and that has been converted into a cafe that people can use as a pitstop as they trek or cycle along the Rail Corridor.?

They've done an excellent job. Historical display and captions are outstanding, and among the best I've seen anywhere.
