The Renown Investigator

The Renown Investigator

If you are seeking to improve your communication skills, it is important to remember the six steps to superior communication known as the "Renown Investigator". Follow these six steps, most likely in order, to reach a shared understanding with the individual.

  1. Feelings: How are you each feeling at the time of the conversation? Tired? Energetic? Scared? Happy? Sad? How one feels has a big impact on the way they communicate.
  2. Attitudes: What is the attitude of each person to the subject at hand. We all have experienced conversations on the weather that are handled a lot differently than a conversation about religion or politics.
  3. Motives: Why do they want to talk to you or you to them? Are you trying to convey a thought, teach a new procedure, or convince them to take your point of view?
  4. Experiences: This refers to your experience with then other person. In past conversations have they been receptive? Were they extremely reactionary? Were they like a sponge, soaking up every word you utter?
  5. Perception: The final two steps are things the communicator needs to consider. First, you need to perceive if they are understanding you, agreeing with you, or if they are zoned out from the conversation. Unless they are engaged, the communication cannot be successful.
  6. Interpretation: Lastly, what are the words you are using and how are they being interpreted by the other person. Remember we are looking at verbal communication so saying, "You are PHAT" has a big difference from "you are fat". Regional dialects and terms also play into this. In Michigan the Department of Motor Vehicles does not exist so using that term has to be explained. If a Bostonian in Cleveland asks for a "Bubbler" they will only get a blank look.

Remember these six keys to successful communication and you will find it much easier to reach a shared understanding in your conversations.

So who is this person called "The Renown Investigator"? Quite simply it is you. Well that is if you follow these steps, which as an an acrostic is F-A-M-E P-I (AS IN FAMOUS PRIVATE INVESTIGAOTR.
