Renewables on the rise in the Western Balkans

The renewable energy sector in the Western Balkans is booming with increasing attention from international companies. Our upcoming Energy Week Western Balkans 2022 brings together the authorities and energy companies of Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo as well as international financial institutions and major multinational investors for a dialogue aimed at fostering the deployment of renewable energy in the region. ?

Our media monitoring reveals the following developments in the region over the last couple of months.

?SERBIA?

·??????The Ministry of Mining and Energy plans to announce auctions in the third quarter of 2022 for awarding premiums for the construction of renewable energy power plants. The government has already set a?400 MW quota?for wind farm premiums.

·??????Fintel Energija and MK Group have signed an MoU with PowerChina, marking the launch of the Agrosolar project in the municipality of Kula. The Agrosolar project will involve?crop production and electricity generation with solar panels in the same place. The total capacity of the solar panels is expected to be 660 MW.

·??????Serbia’s MK Group and Slovenia’s ALFI Green Energy Fund will take over the construction of the Kriva?a wind farm, a 105 MW project developed by Austria’s Ivicom Holding. Wind turbines will be delivered by Nordex, in its first order from Serbia.

·??????Romania and Serbia are in talks over the development of the ?erdap 3 PSHPP, which will be a hybrid power plant.

·??????The construction of Elektroprivreda Srbije’s first wind farm, Kostolac, began.?Siemens Gamesa will deliver and install 73 MW of wind turbines for the project.

·??????Elektroprivreda Srbije has chosen the companies to prepare a preliminary design and feasibility study for the 630 MW Bistrica PSHPP.

ALBANIA

·??????1.2 GW of solar projects are in the pipeline in Albania. Among the projects under development:

  • A 274 MW solar PV plant by Greencells
  • A 150 MW solar PV plant by EDIL-AL-IT
  • A 150 MW solar PV plant by Aga Solar
  • The 140 MW Karavatsa plant by Voltalia
  • The 100 MW Spitalle project by Voltalia
  • A 100 MW PV plant in Mallakast?r municipality by Greennat Solar Park Ballsh
  • Blue-1 and Blue-2 PV facilities of 57.6 MW each?by Blessed Investment and Matrix Konstruksion?
  • Info-Telecom's ALB-Solar1 project for 50 MW
  • Arsol Energy’s 50 MW PV project
  • Premium Solar Park1 by Premium Energy of 30 MW
  • Sharp Solar Park1 by Sharp Energy of 20 MW.

·??????373.1 MW in active wind power projects in Albania, among which:

  • Two wind farms with a combined capacity of 234 MW by Biopower Green Energy and Marseglia Group
  • A 69.3 MW wind farm by EU Green Energy
  • Five projects with 10 MW each and six others with just 3 MW apiece capacity.

KOSOVO

·??????Kosovo’s ERO is reviewing applications for preliminary permits for four hydropower projects with a total installed capacity of 298 MW, among which is a 250 MW PSHPP. The Drini PSHPP in the Prizren area is under development by?Eurokos.

·??????Kosovo plans to organize an auction for 100 MW of solar capacity, divided into three lots. The auction is to be launched by the end of 2022.

MONTENEGRO

·??????The Parliament of Montenegro elected the new cabinet. Minister of Capital Investments Ervin Ibrahimovi? will be responsible for the energy sector. The new government sees green energy as the main economic driver.

BiH

·??????The Republic of Srpska has issued two separate public calls for 50-year concession deals to build an 80 MW solar power plant and a 39.6 MW wind farm, both called Planik, in the municipality of Bile?a.

·??????Greenstat, in partnership with GP Toming from Grude, has launched the construction of the 45 MW Petjnik solar power plant in the municipality of Grude.

NORTH MACEDONIA

·??????The Government of North Macedonia has adopted its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP).?Key goals include a plan for gradual closure of the country’s only coal-fired power plants TPP Oslomej and TPP Bitola by 2027, and the acceleration of the use of renewable sources.
