Renewables Need No Carbon Price
Renewable energy doesn't just hold the crown as the cheapest form of power generation around most of the globe -- its cost lead over conventional energy looks likely to strengthen and stay permanent. That's a big takeaway from Energy Intelligence's new regional data on the cost of electricity generation, known as the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Going forward, solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind are set for dramatic growth which, in combination with constantly improving efficiency, is fueling economies of scale and dragging costs down. This will happen regardless of carbon pricing, experts believe, and is likely to boost related technologies such as green hydrogen based on water electrolysis. The full report and methodology are published in this week's EI New Energy.
