Renewable hydrogen: new rules formally adopted in EU

Renewable hydrogen: new rules formally adopted in EU

?? Yesterday, the Commission officially published two acts ?? outlining detailed rules for defining renewable hydrogen in the EU. ????

?? The first act determines the conditions under which hydrogen, hydrogen-based fuels, or other energy carriers can be considered renewable fuels of non-biological origin.

?? The second act presents the methodology for calculating greenhouse gas emissions throughout the life cycle of RFNBO.

??? The rules will officially come into effect 20 days after their publication in the Official Journal on 20/06/2023.

?? The document addresses the key contradictions that arise in the production of renewable hydrogen:

?? The balancing demand for electricity in the energy system ?? is currently met by gas and coal generation, so additional demand for hydrogen production leads to increased consumption of fossil fuels. ??

?? Renewable energy sources have a stochastic generation pattern ?????, while hydrogen production facilities typically operate as baseload due to hydrogen storage capacity limitations and consumption patterns. ???

?? Temporary constraints on electricity supply may occur between renewable energy sources and hydrogen producers due to congestion in the grid infrastructure. ???

?? The implementation of these rules for defining renewable hydrogen in the EU ???? paves the way for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future! ????
