Renewable Energies in Latin America and the Caribbean

Current Situation and Perspective on Electricity Generation

Abstract: Energy is essential to address almost all of the great challenges and opportunities in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region, whether it is to reduce poverty, produce and cook food, promote employment, improve security, use digital services, generate electricity, or increase income. However, the current energy structure and its extensive use of fossil fuels put the environmental balance at risk, as it is one of the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. LAC countries are taking measures to carry out an energy transition based on the burning of fossil fuels for electricity generation to an economy based on the use of renewable energy with the aim of the same purpose, to prevent further deterioration of the environment.
