This afternoon I read a phrase on a digital platform that made me reflect:
"The best way to prevent something bad from happening is to see it coming ahead of time and you won't be able to see it if you refuse to face this possibility" Williams S. Burroughs.
We are in unprecedented moments in the modern era and I am sure that more than one will be reluctant to see changes come. The interior of the human being is comfortable and not very adaptable to changes. I am sure that many will be waiting for the moment to return to their normal activity as if nothing had happened, I am sure that the change is not in the plans of certain people, I am sure that the comfort of some representatives, bosses, directors, middle managers , etc ... will make them think that any comment on change is synonymous with catastrophism, negativity, horror stories and I can understand it to the point that it is not easy to anticipate events before they come, but what is easy , as responsible for any business area, is to raise possibilities.
As representatives of a company, regardless of what it is dedicated to, hospitality, restaurants, tourism, cruises, industry, textiles, travel, food, medicine, agriculture, etc ... as leader of a department, as leader of a certain area or as maximum responsible, you have two options.
1. Stay confined to your home until the authorities tell you that you can leave now.
2. Raise or put on paper the possibilities that will exist to start again within your professional activity.
Obviously the second option will always be relative and will be subject to general circumstances that are related to the business you represent; clients, agencies, sales, budgets, other countries, trends, etc ... but that second option can never be subject to your way of thinking, your way of acting, your way of projecting possible solutions to possible problems.
Uncertainty must become an opportunity to come back with more force, an opportunity to see our shortcomings and virtues and, of course, to see how to fill those shortcomings and further enhance those virtues.
Wanting or pretending to be a guru of the future is complicated but being realistic is not. If someone had told us a year ago that this could happen, surely the vast majority of mortals would have branded him as alarmist, and had branded him as crazy or wanting to instill fear in others, but it is clear that in the circumstances that we live today, to do that with those who intend to contribute or add to any type of project, company or professional future, I catalog it as reckless.
It is definitely the time to think and think a lot, to write, to propose other scenes that can be carried out with the minimum risk of failure for companies. It is time to establish new theories that complement the reality of our clients, it is time to put ourselves in their shoes and try to find out how they are willing to travel from now on, visit us or consume our services. It is time to do self-criticism ... are we really ready for this change of era? Will I be able as a company to provide what the customer needs if I continue doing the same? Am I able as a company to guarantee security with what I offer? Am I capable as a company of generating trust so that they consume my services? What can I contribute again? What is the key that I must touch as a company so that the client sees in me transparency, tranquility, commitment and security?
This morning I was pleasantly surprised by an email that I received from an international company dedicated to Hotel Tourism and that I am not going to say the name due to confidentiality. In that email they asked me for my opinion in writing, a maximum of one page for each question on the following questions:
1- How do you think covid19 will affect the gastronomy of hotels?
2- How do you think leadership should be considered towards our employees from now on?
I am aware, because I have been able to speak with other colleagues by profession, that I have not been the only one who has received this email and I am also aware that the responses are free and in solidarity, which seems logical and normal to me. The crux of the matter is that, if there are companies that are already working and proposing other scenes and best of all, I imagine, it is that, from all those opinions of professionals in the sector that they are collecting, they will draw conclusions that surely will They help to establish new parameters for action to its previously established procedures.
I don't know exactly where the initiative comes from, I don't know if it comes from the operations department, from HR, from the board itself, from an employee or from a corporate one, but what I'm sure is that it comes from a true leader. Being able, not only to use the resources that they have internally in their company, but also to be able to work with the opinion of third-party professionals and without fear of exposing their greatness and humility, seems to me an act of commitment to the company that represents, also unprecedented.
The leadership is also going to change course after this Covid crisis19. The word leadership has nothing to do with the position you represent and we all know that. You can be the CEO of any company and have no idea how to manage emotions, you can be a corporate of any other and not know how to address your collaborators. The leader of the future is easy to detect starting with the confinement we are experiencing, the true leader is the one who calls you or writes to know about you and your family, is the one who not only calls you to tell you that you are fired until everything This ends, but it also does to have a virtual chat with a protagonist coffee. He is the one who will listen to you and wants to listen to you over the phone to send positive energy to you and your loved ones or with a simple “wasap”. How many bosses have called you these days to ask how you are? There is the difference. He is the one who knows how to put the discrepancies of professional opinions of the past before giving way to the deepest personal level, that is the true leader and of course, he does not have to have any category above the others, although those who do, are assume that they must do so.
The leader of the most immediate future will especially have to have the capacity to listen and know how to value within himself whether what he hears he can use or not, but without a doubt he must definitely learn to listen and from there, generate positive synergies that give confidence. others to lead and manage. In the end the leader manages people, not numbers ... some better, others not so much, some with very high expectations for their way of being, others with less, some with more reasoning capacity, others without any, some with more positivity and others with Real stories not to sleep, but I insist, the leader of the future will have nothing left but to know how to deal with everyone, accept all opinions, even if he does not like them and wisely and professionally handle chess pieces so that everyone wins and of course the company will always benefit from that leadership management.
