My path has been anything but ordinary.?

I grew up living in a low-income family - surrogate parent to younger siblings, child-carer to a sick mother.

Aged 19, I achieved a life-long wish to become a police officer, serving in the UK force for 22 years where my experiences were equally, some of the most delightful, and most harrowing of times.

I’ve faced incredibly challenging times as a parent to a child who hates the body they were born in.

Navigated the highs and lows of business for nearly a decade since quitting the police.

Experienced times of financial feast, famine, and frustration in business.

And amongst it all, I’ve succumbed to self-doubt, low self-worth, guilt, shame and the ramifications past family traumas had on my mindset.

I've continually challenged various narratives suggesting I faced an inherent disadvantage due to my circumstances.

But always firmly believing it’s individual choices and actions that play a significant role in shaping our lives. Personal outcomes are not, or at least should not, be predetermined by race, gender or environment.

It's my belief that when people take personal responsibility - very often a challenge when up against familiar norms - they unlock the potential to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.?

Once I understood this, my life changed and continues to change for the better.

When I started in business, I thought my website and my business cards were the key to getting customers through the door, and money in the bank.

After too much bawling in sheer desperation wondering where-oh-where are all my customers at, a stark realisation hit me.

Two realisations actually.

1. Nobody knew who I was. Having a logo on a website and handing out a few business cards are just tiny ripples in the much bigger pond of business. I needed to be known. And by people who could actually take a decision to buy from me if I was the right fit.
2. I had no processes. Not for prospecting. Not for selling. Not for onboarding. The things I did and said to attract and win business varied from day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month.

Thankfully, I found a way out of the feast and famine entrepreneurial lifestyle I'd landed in...

Mind Your Thoughts

As I write this, Birmingham, and indeed the whole of the UK, is in turmoil over race riots.

Typically, I avoid the news - bad news finds you wherever you go. But this time, I was intrigued: what type of person could commit such a heinous crime against an innocent group of children??

In the days following since engaging with media stories, I've noticed a significant degradation in my mental health and thought processes, with stress levels elevated and a persistent fear of being randomly attacked because I'm a black female in the UK.?

The truth is, everyone is under attack now, not only black and brown people.

These riots are affecting people of all colours and ethnic backgrounds - a fact the media is cleverly manipulating with mis- and disinformation.

My detective years have taught me one fundamental skill: you must collect all the pieces of the puzzle and put them together, in order to see the whole picture and make an informed decision.?

Unfortunately, this isn’t happening in our society today.

And as long as we let ourselves be controlled and ruled by external forces such as the media, we will lead our lives in a state of fear, and make irrational decisions and take irrational actions based on a puzzle with missing pieces.

Control what you see and what you listen to. ?

Preserve your mental health and mindset.?

Make decisions from a place of calm and balance rather than from a place of fear and heightened emotion.?

Needless to say, I’ve removed the news from my feed and already my mind is in a much better place to truly assess and understand what is going on.

Above all else, may you rest in peace Elsie, Alice and Bebe.

I’m so sorry this happened to you and I hope swift and rightful justice is served.
