What is Renaissance art?

The term Renaissance means "Rebirth". Renaissance art which began in Italy around 1400 AD and lasted until 1620 AD is known for its paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. Renowned paintings and sculptures ever created can be found in the Renaissance.

Characteristics of Renaissance Art

Renaissance art depicted Greek and Roman ideas of imagination and openness to new ways of human thoughts and ideas.?

Some of the characteristics of Renaissance Art are:

1. The figures were shown in real poses with their physical features.?

2. The main subject of art was the anatomy of the human body and it received a lot of attention. The human body was viewed as lovely by the painters.

3. Renaissance painters were masters in giving meaning to their work by paying attention to the smallest of details.?

4. Renaissance art was unique and non-religious subjects were also illustrated by the artists.?

5. Many painters developed specialized skill sets which helped them become more famous. They used their abilities to gain popularity.?

Colors used in Renaissance Art

The colors were mostly prepared from plants such as saffron and brazilwood and minerals like azurite and malachite. Some colors were so costly that they were only used for specific areas of a painting. The valuable stone Lapis Lazuli was ground into a fine powder and combined with other substances to create a deep blue color.?

What was so unique about Renaissance Art?

The new notion of "humanism", a style that was established by Greek and Roman culture, served as an inspiration for Renaissance art.?

Humanism downplayed religion and it enabled the artists to depict mankind from their point of view. With time other painting styles also developed which include natural phenomena, realism, and linear perspective.?

Famous Renaissance Artists?

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo di Ser Piero da Vinci is considered one of history's greatest painters. Possibly one of the most talented people as well. Leonardo is regarded as the epitome of the Renaissance Man, a multi-talented individual.

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was an Italian artist and expert in Renaissance art. He had an unparalleled influence on the western craft.

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, also known as Raphael was an Italian artist of the High Renaissance. His art is praised for its clarity of structure and simplicity of the Neoplatonic human form.
