Removing "Busy" from my vocabulary
I commonly overuse the word busy to hide from the truth, that is, why I cannot complete a task, call someone back, spend time with a friend or meet an expectation. It has become a currency to get out of uncomfortable situations, in being dismissive and sometimes defensive. For me, being busy is just as bad as being late. It is a bad habit that pushes people away and incredibly disrespectful.
Unfortunately, I allow it into my life when I condone others to use the word by replying;
"I totally understand"; or
"Glad you're busy!"
Afterward, I would think that person lacked prioritization, time management or honesty. Worst, that I don't matter!
For the next 40-days, I will replace "busy" with the real reason for my actions or inactions. I will be clear with my colleagues, clients, and friends so both parties can benefit from the communication.
"I will not take on your search because you clearly do not value your own people."; or
“I haven’t called you in a while because we really don’t have much in common anymore and though we are still friends, I am happy to spend time with you only once a year.”
