This removed hate, fear and weakness from my life

What you are about to read are the very things that have helped me personally over the last several years of my life, and my sincere hope is that you too will find comfort and strength in something that has the power to change anything and everything.
We all find strength in many different ways, but the most powerful is in the written word. Several times in my life I was at the very bottom of the barrel of life and was driven to my knees more then I care to say and it was always something I heard, was told or even overheard someone talking within earshot. No matter how, something was read or said that helped me face my fears and demons for one more day.
Below are some of my most treasured quotes, sayings or words of encouragement and they could do for you what they have done for me:
Here is what I would do:
-When I would hear something that made me think and I'd write it down
-Read through it later until it sparked another thought.
-Read it over and over again, until I understood the meaning.
-Applied that one thought to an area of life that day.
-At bed time, think about the impact of that thought and action for that day.
Please enjoy!

SUCCESS STATEMENTS AND POSITIVE THOUGHTS
Never settle for crumbs; when you can have the bakery (I always thought that I would only be able to have the crumbs, but I have come to realize that, we do not have to settle for less than the very best we have to offer).
A man is literally what he thinks.
You got to start believing in yourself.
Life will give you what you fight for.
Life will give you whatever you’ll accept.
Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.
Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.
The ship’s captain can’t see his destination for fully 99% of his journey, but he knows what it is, where it is, and that he will reach it if he keeps doing certain things a certain way.
A man who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the man doing it.
The setting of goals, and strict adherence to them, will cause the window of opportunity to open in your life.
Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
There has never been a successful or creatively gifted person who hasn’t known failure, frustration, or tough times.
A man is great not because he hasn’t failed; a man is great because failure hasn’t stopped him.
Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.
Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then is not an act, but a habit.
The only place where success comes before work is in a dictionary.
Always take a job that is too big for you.
Clothes don’t make a man, but clothes have got many a man a good job.
Money doesn’t always bring happiness. People with ten million dollars are no happier, than people with nine million dollars.
Experience is the one thing you have plenty of when you’re too old to get the job.
It is said that the face is the window of the soul.
What you will do matters. All you need is to do it.
I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.
The two hardest things to handle in life are failure and success.
Be like a postage stamp; stick to one thing until you get there.
Lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know.
Every direction leads to an ultimate destination: our destiny.
The Success Formula: a) Decide what you want, b) Take action, c) Notice what’s working or not, d) Change your approach until you achieve what you want.
As soon as you truly commit to making something happen, the “how” will reveal itself.
I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.
Success truly is the result of good judgement, good judgement is the result of experience, and experience is often the result of bad judgement!
A man is great not because he hasn’t failed; a man is great because failure hasn’t stopped him.
There are three types of people in the world “there’s the wills, the won’ts, and the cant’s.
The first accomplish everything; the second oppose everything; the third fail in everything.”
If it is success you desire, failure is unavoidable.
Successful people often experience more failures than failures do.
One good failure can teach you more about success than four years at the best university.
Failing just might be the best thing that ever happens to you.
The great man shows his greatness by the way that he treats the little man.
Any failure will tell you that success is nothing but luck.
Virtue is not given by money, but from virtue comes money (Plato)
Life will turn out the way you see it turning out.
If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll go where you’ve always gone and you’ll be what you’ve always been.
Less then 5% of the world’s population lives in the United States, we consume more than 50% of the world’s cocaine. Our national defense budget, which runs in the billions, is equaled by what we spend on alcohol alone.
Know that it’s your decisions, not your conditions, that determine your destiny.
Everything you and I do, we do either out of our need to avoid pain or our desire to gain pleasure.
Actually, the more you've accomplished in the eyes of others, the less support you may receive for your entrepreneurial venture. If you were a good student and a good all around person, people are apt to encourage you to be a lawyer, a doctor, or an accountant and not a pet storeowner or a house painter.
On the other hand, if you were a complete disappointment to everyone and were considered a loser, then other people are going to look for anything positive in you. If you said to them that you intended to straighten yourself out and open a pet shop or paint houses, they'd probably be very encouraging and say that either choice was an excellent idea.
There is an old story about a glass filled to the midpoint. An optimist sees it as being half full. The pessimist thinks that it's half-empty.
An entrepreneur is probably going to look at the odds for small business success from a more optimistic view "the glass is half full" perspective. "What you really mean to say is that 45% of new small businesses are successful after the first year."
Through your effort you create something of value and then, when someone else buys that item of value, you "make money." Take a wood carver, for example. She takes a meaningless block of wood, and through her personal value added creates a beautiful work of art. However, the actual making of money occurs when someone else buys this new valuable work of art.
Once you know "Someone else has to have money before you can make money" and "Someone else has to spend that money before you can make that money," you can begin looking for someone with money, spending money.
Example is the best means to instruct or inspire others. The man who shows them as well as tells them is the one who gets the most of his subordinates.
You're much more likely to succeed if your purpose is to do something useful to humanity and become a millionaire doing it, rather than if your purpose is just making a million. In other words, service to humanity should come first and making a million second. (J. Paul Getty, put humanity first and making a million second. It seemed to work for him - he became the richest man in the world!)
Pretend everyone is wearing a sign that says, 'Make me feel important' and you'll do fine.
Don’t be too timid and squeamish about your actions, all of life is an experiment.
The willingness to do creates the ability to do.
Do or do not; There is no try.
If you say you can’t do it, the world will believe you; if you say you can do it, the world will await the proof.
FEAR- false evidence appearing real.
If you want a thing to be done, go; if not, send.
The Best Executive is the one who has enough sense to pick good people to do what he wants done, and self- restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.
True excellence in businesses eludes some simply because they fail to understand a very important truth. Bringing the best out in people is key to great leadership. Simply directing people won't bring about true excellence.
One of the greatest challenges for many highly motivated and capable Business leaders is the temptation to try, or think it necessary, to do "it" themselves. Too Often, would be leaders attempt to take on tasks someone else may be better equipped or in a better position to accomplish.
Looking for ways to avoid work is not the way to generate profit. This can become a distraction that will keep you from real success.
Since we can't know what knowledge will be most needed in the future, it is senseless to try to teach it in advance. Instead, we should try to turn out people who love learning so much and learn so well that they will be able to learn whatever needs to be learned.
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.
Character is higher than intellect. A great soul will be strong to live as well as think.
People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in the world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want and if they can't find them, make them.
Good timber does not grow with ease. The stronger the wind the stronger the trees.
Failure is nature's plan to prepare you for great responsibilities.
The principle goal of education is to create men who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done - men who are creative, inventive and discoverers.
He then learns that in going down into the secrets of his own mind he has descended into the secrets of all minds.
What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.
The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.
Profits are like breathing. You have to have them. But who would stay alive just to breathe?
There are many elements to a campaign. Leadership is number one. Everything else is number two.
Teach thy tongue to say 'I do not know' and thou shalt progress.
The noblest search is the search for excellence.
It is funny about life: if you refuse to accept anything but the very best you will very often get it.
Courage is an everyday thing. When we look reality squarely in the eye and refuse to back away from our awareness, we are living courage.
It is well to remember that the entire population of the universe, with one trifling exception, is composed of others.
Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.
Periods of tranquility are seldom prolific of creative achievement. Mankind has to be stirred up.
Action may not always bring happiness; but there is no happiness without action.
Leadership is not magnetic personality--that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not 'making friends and influencing people'--that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person's vision to higher sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.
When the leadership is right and the time is right, the people can always be counted upon to follow--to the end at all costs.
Experience is not what happens to a man, it is what a man does with what happens to him.
You can't have a better tomorrow if you are thinking about yesterday all the time.
In communities where men build ships for their own sons to fish or fight from, quality is never a problem
Your philosophy determines whether you will go for the disciplines or continue the errors.
One cool judgment is worth a dozen hasty councils. The thing to do is to supply light and not heat.
It doesn’t matter which side of the fence you get off on sometimes. What matters most is getting off. You cannot make progress without making decisions.
Problems do not go away. They must be worked through or else they remain, forever a barrier to the growth and development of the spirit.
My definition of success is total self acceptance. We can obtain all of the material possessions we desire quite easily, however, attempting to change our deepest thoughts and learning to love ourselves is a monumental challenge. We may achieve success in our business lives but it never quite means as much if we do not feel good inside. Once we feel good about ourselves inside we can genuinly lend ourselves to others.
The longest journey of any person is the journey inward.
This great misfortune - to be incapable of solitude.
The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled.
No army can withstand the strength of an idea whose time has come.
Success is a journey not a destination. The doing is usually more important than the outcome. Not everyone can be Number 1.
To become an able and successful man in any profession, three things are necessary, nature, study and practice.
The first and most important step toward success is the feeling that we can succeed.
Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.
The man who goes farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare. The sure-thing boat never gets far from shore.
To know a man, observe how he wins his object, rather than how he loses it; for when we fail, our pride supports; when we succeed; it betrays us.
Success is the child of audacity.
To succeed... you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you.
If A equals success, then the formula is A equals X plus Y and Z, with X being work, Y play, and Z keeping your mouth shut.
Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value.
The path to success is to take massive, determined action.
Success is neither magical or mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.
Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become.
Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day...
Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell 'em, Certainly I can! - and get busy and find out how to do it.
Success, in a generally accepted sense of the term, means the opportunity to experience and to realize to the maximum the forces that are within us.
To climb steep hills requires slow pace at first.
People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in the world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, make them.
True success is overcoming the fear of being unsuccessful.
We must walk consciously only part way toward our goal, and then leap in the dark to our success.
Success is the necessary misfortune of life, but it is only to the very unfortunate that it comes early.
All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then Success is sure.
Big men become big by doing what they didn't want to do when they didn't want to do it.
Every success is built on the ability to do better than good enough.
If people did not prefer reaping to sowing, there would not be a hungry person in the land.
If the truth be known, most successes are built on a multitude of failures.
Make service your first priority, not success and success will follow.
If man has good corn, or wood, or boards, or pigs to sell, or can make better chairs or knives, crucibles, or church organs, than anybody else, you will find a broad, hard-beaten road to his house, though it be in the woods.
Often a certain abdication of prudence and foresight is an element of success.
Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.
It is only as we develop others that we permanently succeed.
The prospect of success in achieving our most cherished dream is not without its terrors. Who is more deprived and alone than the man who has achieved his dream?
Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.
There is no royal road to anything. One thing at a time, all things in succession. That which grows fast, withers as rapidly. That which grows slowly, endures.
He who has achieved success has worked well, laughed often and loved much.
Strategy is a style of thinking, a conscious and deliberate process, an intensive implementation system, the science of insuring future success.
Not the senses I have but what I do with them is my kingdom.
Success has always been easy to measure. It is the distance between one's origins and one's final achievement.
The penalty of success is to be bored by the attentions of people who formerly snubbed you.
The only certain means of is to render more and better service than is expected of you, no matter what your task may be.
The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting goals and achieving them. Even the most tedious chore will become endurable as you parade through each day convinced that every task, no matter how menial or boring, brings you closer to fulfilling your dreams.
Many a man has finally succeeded only because he has failed after repeated efforts. If he had never met defeat he would never have known any great victory.
When a man feels throbbing within him the power to do what he undertakes as well as it can possibly be done, and all of his faculties say amen to what he is doing, and give their unqualified approval to his efforts, - this is happiness, this is success.
The gent who wakes up and finds himself a success hasn't been asleep.
Even on the most exalted throne in the world we are only sitting on our own bottom.
If you achieve success, you will get applause, and if you get applause, you will hear it. My advice to you concerning applause is this; enjoy it but never quite believe it.
There is only one success ... to be able to spend your life in your own way, and not to give others absurd maddening claims upon it.
Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.
Instead of thinking about where you are, think about where you want to be. It takes twenty years of hard work to become an overnight success.
If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you'll achieve the same results.
Replying to the tributes paid to him at a testimonial dinner, Herbert Bayard Swope said; I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure -- try to please everybody.
Success isn't necessarily permanent - but neither is failure.
The secret of success is to do all you can do without thought of success.
Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.
Would you like me to give you a formula for... success? It's quite simply, really. Double your rate of failure... You're thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn't at all... You can be discouraged by failure -- or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember that's where you'll find success. On the far side of failure.
If a man has talent and cannot use it, he has failed. If he has a talent and uses only half of it, he has partly failed. If he has a talent and learns somehow to use the whole of it, he has gloriously succeeded and has a satisfaction and a triumph few men ever know.
Success is the maximum utilization of the ability that you have.
You don't pay the price for success. You enjoy the price for success.
It's not only the most difficult thing to know one's self, but the most inconvenient.
The self-explorer, whether he wants to or not, becomes the explorer of everything else. He learns to see himself, but suddenly, provided he was honest, all the rest appears, and it is as rich as he was, and, as a final crowning, richer.
The most excellent and divine counsel, the best and most profitable advertisement of all others, but the least practiced, is to study and learn how to know ourselves. This is the foundation of wisdom and the highway to whatever is good. . God, Nature, the wise, the world, preacher man, exhort him both by word and deed to the study of himself.
He that knows himself, knows others; and he that is ignorant of himself, could not write a very profound lecture on other men's heads.
We know what we are, but not what we may be.
Nay, be a Columbus to whole new continents and worlds within you, opening new channels, not of trade, but of thought. Every man is the lord of a realm beside which the earthly empire of the Czar is but a petty state, a hummock left by the ice.
Before a man can wake up and find himself famous he has to wake up and find himself.
Prudence is but experience, which equal time equally bestows on all men, in those things they equally apply themselves unto.
I hope I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable titles the character of an "Honest Man.
Words are wise men's counters, they do but reckon by them; but they are the money of fools.
To be prepared for war is one of most effectual means of preserving peace.
The passions that incline men to peace are fear of death, desire of such things as necessary to commodious living, and a hope by their industry to obtain them. Such is the nature of men, that howsoever they may acknowledge many others to be more witty, or more eloquoent, or more learned, yet they will hardly believe there be man so wise as themselves.
Science is the knowledge of consequences, and dependence of one fact upon another.
It's not what you are, but what you don't become that hurts. Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. - Calvin Coolidge
"Genius is 1% Inspiration and 99% Perspiration" - Thomas A. Edison
Eat a different breakfast cereal. Take a different route to work. Get out of your office. When was the last time something inspiring or clever happened there? Nurture peripheral vision. The interesting "stuff" usually is going on beyond the margins of the professional's ever-narrowing line-of-sight. Don't "help". Let the people who work for you slip, trip, fall - and grow and learn on their own. Avoid moderation in all things. "Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess"
There is one unalterable difference between a soldier and a civilian: the civilian never does more than he is paid to do. – Rommel
The greatest happiness is to vanquish your enemy: to chase him before you; to see his cities reduced to ashes; to rob him of his wealth; to see those dear to him bathed in tears; to clasp to your bosom his wives and daughters. - Ghengis Khan, 1226.

" Did you ever notive that people, Who once seemed so big, And took up so much psychological space, Seem to shrink as we feel more secure?" " The contacts you establish in life, can at times open doors for you. If you use your knowledge and your ability to know where that knowledge can be the most beneficial to you and your contacts, then you will succeed. " If a man hasn't discovered something he will die for, He isn't fit to live." --- Martin Luther King --- " If you think it's too late, then it probably is. As he got closer he realized the figure was that of a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?" The youth replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean. The sun is up and the tide is going out. If don't throw them in, they will die." "Son," the man said, "Don't you realize There are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can 't possibly make a difference!" " If a man is called to be a street sweeper, He should sweep streets, Even as Michelangelo painted, Or Beethoven composed music, Or Shakespeare wrote poetry. Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today? The day is almost over, and its toiling time is through; Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you? Can you say tonight, in parting with the day that's slipping fast, That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed? Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said; Does the man whose hopes were fading, Now with courage look ahead? Did you waste the day, or lose it? Was it well or sorely spent? Did you leave a trail of kindness, or a scar of discontent? There have been joys too great to be described in words, and there have been griefs upon which I have not dared to dwell; and with these in mind I say... Climb if you will, but remember that courage and strength are not without prudence, and that a momentary negligence may destroy the happiness of a lifetime. Do nothing in haste; look well to each step; and from the beginning think...what may be the end." ( On Love ) " My mind tells me to give up, but my heart will not let me." " Everything is good...as long as it is unpossessed." " Neither will the wave which has passed be called back; Nor can the hour which has gone by return." --- Ovid (B.C. 43-18 A.D.) --- " The galleries are full of critics. They play no ball. They make no mistakes because they attempt nothing. Down in the arena are the doers. They make mistakes because they try many things. The person who makes no mistakes lacks boldness And the spirit of adventure. They are the ones who never try anything. They are the brake on the wheel of progress. And yet it cannot be truly said they make no mistakes, Because their biggest mistake is the very fact they try nothing, And do nothing, Except criticize those who do things." --- General Shoup, USMC on criticism " Accept that some days you are the pigeon, And some days you are the statue." MACBETH: Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased, pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow, Raze out the written troubles of the brain, and with some sweet oblivious antidote Cleanse the stuffed bosom of that perilous stuff Which weighs upon the heart? DOCTOR: Therein the patient Must minister to himself.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
But how shall we expect charity towards others, when we are uncharitable to ourselves? Charity begins at home, is the voice of the world; yet is every man his greatest enemy, and, as it were, his own executioner.
THOMAS BROWNE

CHARITY
Also See GIVING, GOOD DEEDS, SERVICE, PHILANTROPY
Charity creates a multitude of sins.
OSCAR WILDE
Charity degrades those who receive it and hardens those who dispense it.
GEORGE SAND
Charity, as if it didn't have enough trouble in this day and age, will always be suspected of morbidity—sado-masochism, perversity of some sort. All higher or moral tendencies lie under suspicion of being rackets. Things we simply honor with old words, but betray or deny in our very nerves.
SAUL BELLOW
The Eight Grades of Charity:
- To give reluctantly 2. To give cheerfully but not adequately 3. To give cheerfully and adequately, but only after being asked 4. To give cheerfully, adequately, and of your own free will, but to put it in the recipient's hand in such a way as to make him feel lesser 5. To let the recipient know who the donor is, but not the reverse 6. To know who is receiving your charity but remain anonymous to him 7. To have neither the donor nor the recipient be aware of the other's identity 8. To dispense with charity altogether, by enabling your fellow humans to have the wherewithal to earn their own living
MAIMONIDES
For those who are not hungry, it is easy to palaver about the degradation of charity.
CHARLOTTE BRONT?
Don't use the impudence of a beggar as an excuse for not helping him.
RABBI SCHMELKE OF NICOLSBURG
Anticipate charity by preventing poverty; assist the reduced fellowman, either by a considerable gift, or a sum of money, or by teaching him a trade, or by putting him in the way of business, so that he may earn an honest livelihood, and not be forced to the dreadful alternative of holding out his hand for charity. This is the highest step and the summit of charity's golden ladder.
MAIMONIDES
The highest exercise of charity is charity towards the uncharitable.
- S. BUCKMINSTER
The contents of Sitting Bull's pockets were often emptied into the hands of small, ragged little boys, nor could he understand how so much wealth should go brushing by, unmindful of the poor.
ANNIE OAKLEY
The white man knows how to make everything, but he does not know how to distribute it.
SITTING BULL
Every charitable act is a stepping stone towards heaven. HENRY WARD BEECHER
A disciple having asked for a definition of charity, the Master said: Love One Another.
CONFUCIUS
Every good act is charity. Your smiling in your brother's face, is charity; an exhortation of your fellowman to virtuous deeds, is equal to alms-giving; your putting a wanderer in the right road, is charity; your assisting the blind, is charity; your removing stones, and thorns, and other obstructions from the road, is charity; your giving water to the thirsty, is charity. A man's true wealth hereafter, is the good he does in this world to his fellow-man. When he dies, people will say, "What property has he left behind him?" But the angels will ask, "What good deeds has he sent before him?"
MOHAMMED
Be charitable in your thoughts, in your speech and in your actions. Be charitable in your judgments, in your attitudes and in your prayers. Think charitably of your friends, your neighbors, your relatives and even your enemies. And if there be those whom you can help in a material way, do so in a quiet, friendly, neighborly way, as if it were the most common and everyday experience for you. Tongues of men and angels, gifts of prophecy and all mysteries and all knowledge are as nothing without charity.
CARDINAL HAYES
Charity sees the need, not the cause.
GERMAN PROVERB
Charity begins at home, but should not end there.
THOMAS FULLER, M.D.

SOCRATES
The childhood shows the man, As morning shows the day.
JOHN MILTON
Few parents nowadays pay any regard to what their children say to them. The old-fashioned respect for the young is fast dying out.
OSCAR WILDE
Know you what it is to be a child? It is to be something very different from the man of today. It is to have a spirit yet streaming from the waters of baptism; it is to believe in love, to believe in loveliness, to believe in belief; it is to be so little that the elves can reach to whisper in your ear; it is to turn pumpkins into coaches, and mice into horses, lowness into loftiness, and nothing into everything, for each child has its fairy godmother in its soul.
FRANCIS THOMPSON SHELLEY
My heart leaps up when I behold A rainbow in the sky: So was it when my life began; So is it now I am a man; So be it when I shall grow old, Or let me die! The child is father of the man; And I could wish my days to be Bound each to each by natural piety.
WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

BLANCHE: I'm reading this Spock book on baby care, and he says it's very important for a young child to have a male role model around during its formative years. Now what are we gonna do? . . . ROSE: Oh, Blanche, we don't have anything to worry about. If we give that baby love and attention and understanding, it'll turn out fine. DOROTHY: That's beautiful. ROSE: Besides, what does Spock know about raising babies? On Vulcan, all the kids are born in pods.
GOLDEN GIRLS
We are always too busy for our children; we never give them the time or interest they deserve. We lavish gifts upon them; but the most precious gift—our personal association, which means so much to them—we give grudgingly.
MARK TWAIN

STEPHEN SONDHEIM
Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for; it is a thing to be achieved.
WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN
The way you activate the seeds of your creation is by making choices about the results you want to create. When you make a choice, you mobilize vast human energies and resources which otherwise go untapped. All too often people fail to focus their choices upon results and therefore their choices are ineffective. If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want and all that is left is a compromise.
ROBERT FRITZ
As to marriage or celibacy, let a man take which course he will—he will be sure to repent it.
SOCRATES
If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.
MARCUS ANTONINUS
CIVILIZATION
I believe that order is better than chaos, creation better than destruction. I prefer gentleness to violence, forgiveness to vendetta . . . I think knowledge is preferable to ignorance and I am sure that human sympathy is more valuable than ideology . . . And I think we should remember we are part of a great whole, which for convenience we call nature. All living things are our brothers and sisters. Above all I believe in the God-given genius of certain individuals, and I value a society that makes their existence possible.
KENNETH CLARK

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
If you never want to see a man again, say, "I love you, I want to marry you. I want to have children . . ." -they leave skid marks.
RITA RUDNER
Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: That the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets: "Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."

SALVADOR DALI
You never know what is enough, until you know what is more than enough.

The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists.
- K. CHESTERTON
Want to be a composer? If you can think design, you can execute design—it's only a bunch of air molecules, who's gonna check up on you? Just follow these simple instructions:
- Declare your intention to create a "composition." 2. Start a piece at some time. 3. Cause something to happen over a period of time (it doesn't matter what happens in your "time hole"— we have critics to tell us whether it's any good or not, so we won't worry about that part). 4. End the piece at some time (or keep it going, telling the audience it is a "work in progress"). 5. Get a part-time job so you can continue to do stuff like this.

CURIOSITY
What we have to do is to be forever curiously testing new opinions and courting new impressions.
WALTER PATER
The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.
