Remote working or work in the office?

As businesses have opted for remote work for the past couple of years, most of us have been working away from the office for a while. This might potentially change the way we work on a permanent basis. So here’s our take on remote working.

  1. Work-life balance

The traditional 9-5 work style makes it a struggle for talents to strike an ideal work-life balance. It leaves little time for building relationships with loved ones and developing hobbies. Working at an office also implies dealing with certain formalities, which could also be a burden. Remote work allows one to have the freedom to work at any location, saving talents time for commuting. Yet every coin has two sides. Remote work would potentially blur the line between work, as one’s work schedule is no longer confined to a 9-5 schedule, talents might find themselves spending extra time after hours, potentially leading to burnout.

  1. Technology

Remote work depends heavily on companies’ technological infrastructure, such as video conferencing software and hardware. Given the benchmark set out by the market, companies would have greater incentives to implement changes or upgrades in order to keep up with their competitors. Having access to more advanced technologies would be great for talents as it would make work smoother. However, inconsistency might exist when it comes to internet access, as talents among the same company are likely to reside in different areas. This might hinder efficiency. Extra cybersecurity measures could also become a hassle, as companies might require special configurations such as VPNs and firewalls. It would be difficult to have technical support from a remote location when glitches appear.

3. Productivity

There is a polarised opinion towards the productivity of remote work. Some find it a real gem as it reduces the time for commuting and formalities such as meetings. Others see remote work as a burden, as people might not have access to a dedicated workspace at home, and the household factors and environmental factors are likely to be distractions to talents as well.
