The Remote Work Weekly #8

The Remote Work Weekly #8

Welcome to the eighth edition of The Remote Work Weekly!

If you are new here, my name is Amr, and I am the author of this weekly newsletter. The goal is to keep you updated on the latest in the world of remote work, including news, emerging trends, insights, studies, and more. So, feel free to subscribe so you don't miss an update.

In this week's edition, we explore research on how remote work affects female professionals and review a survey that links the rise of remote work to the delay of CBD office tower development in Australia. As an alternative to the usual Tool of the Week section, you will find three apps/platforms to help you find coworking venues that suit your needs.

Research: The Impact of Remote Work on Women at Different Career Stages

A study has been recently conducted by Harvard Business Review focused on finding impacts on young women as they try to establish their careers. The research surveyed 1055 female software engineers working at Fortune 500 companies.

One of the most affected areas is mentorship. The study found that junior female engineers who worked near their colleagues received 40% more comments on their code. In addition, they received input from a larger group of people when they interacted in person, leading to more diverse perspectives.

Another key finding is the effect on "invisible work," which refers to work that happens in private and is unpaid. The study showed that senior female engineers sitting near their teammates participated in work that went unnoticed, while this was almost non-existent with remote work.

In conclusion, the research suggested that remote work might have a negative effect on junior female engineers since it lowers their chances of learning from more experienced colleagues. On the other hand, it helped senior female engineers boost their output. It is also important to note that better management practices and training programs can help junior professionals with their career development and reduce the amount of invisible work.

Poll: Remote Work is Slowing Down the Next Wave of Office Towers

A survey by Australia's Financial Review suggests that new CBD skyscrapers in Sydney and Melbourne might only emerge in the next decade. According to the experts who participated in this survey, this delay is mainly due to the rise in remote work, which led to weaker demand and high vacancy rates.

Economists suggest that the current oversupply of office space will take years to resolve, pushing back major new developments. Maree Kilroy of Oxford Economics Australia mentioned that office supply in these cities will decline next year, with a

potential increase not anticipated until 2026 or 2027. Moreover, AMP Chief Economist Shane Oliver noted that the shift to remote work has slashed the demand for leased office space by 30-40%.?

The rise of remote work isn't the only factor, a chief economist suggested. The feasibility of new office towers is further hindered by declining property values, rising construction costs, and higher funding expenses.

Tool/s of the Weeks: Find Coworking Spaces wherever you are

Coworking spaces are an integral part of remote workers' lives, even essential for those who prefer to work from an office-like environment. Here are three tools that have been around long enough to be reliable in helping you? find a coworking space that fits your ideal productive environment:?

CoWorker : This platform provides information about coworking spaces worldwide, including ratings, reviews, and facility details. It also includes the option to purchase a coworking pass that grants access to multiple coworking spaces listed on the platform.

Coworking Wiki : A collaborative knowledge base that includes many resources like coworking space information and community-building tips.

WorkFrom : A community-built directory of coworking spaces, cafes, and other work-friendly venues. There seems to be little progress on it, and the focus has shifted to a virtual working tool with the same brand name.
