Remote work is (almost) over. This is why:

For the companies that were forced to adopt remote work during the pandemic, because they had no other option, remote work is almost over.?

Every single day, we see news about another company “forcing” their employees to slowly work again from the office (2 times a week, 3 times a week, and it will probably be back to full time in the office soon).

We can’t deny that. This is happening.

But here comes the interesting part:

The companies that are doing that now never fully embraced remote work.

There is a massive difference between “temporarily accepting” remote work when there are no other options, and fully embracing it.

“Accepting” remote work, almost as a favor to the employees, is very different from restructuring the company’s procedures, tools and mindset to make flexible work a sustainable reality long term.

How do you really feel about remote work now (specially if you are considering landing a remote job)?

Is it “too late” already?

Did you “miss the momentum”?

Is wanting remote jobs now “aiming too high”?

I get asked these questions very often by my career coaching clients when they decide to hire me. They don’t want to waste their time investing on something that won’t last, or on something that is no longer available.

Let me share my reply here, as it might help you in your career decision process too:

There are fully remote companies out there that didn’t have an office before the pandemic, and they are still structured like that. Focus on those companies, so you don’t need to beg or negotiate extensively to get more flexibility at work.

The competition to land a remote job is high. Now that working remotely “got trendy”, everyone wants to at least give it a try. It was not like that when I started working remotely in 2014, but the reality changed. That is why you, more than ever, need to have a solid and tested methodology to achieve the results you want in a shorter time.

Not everybody needs a remote job that allows them to travel the world and work at the same time. This is my reality now, because that is how I want to live my life, but for most professionals, having flexible and non-linear working hours, working from home means being able to pick up their kids from school, and traveling two months per year is already enough. The more flexibility level you aim for, the more limited options you will find (but they still exist!).

Don’t give up before you have tried everything. It’s easy to be fully motivated to land a remote job, apply for 10 jobs every day, and after a week, assume that “you already did everything that was possible, and that you will never land a remote job”.

When you have professional support, your definition of “tried everything” expands exponentially, so don’t say “no” to yourself before really exploring all the options available.

The world of remote jobs can seem overwhelming, especially for those who are just starting to explore the possibilities.
