Remote interviewing is here, and will likely become more and more prevalent in the months and years to come. Remote interviewing opens the door for more opportunity for both employers and job seekers. With an endless supply of options, this platform has become easier to use and necessary in times like these.
Remote interviewing allows for almost all the same interaction you get in an in person meeting, and arguably more of a look at potential hire and who they are. That being said, it is extremely important that job seekers take remote interviews as seriously, if not more seriously than in person. Often, for job seekers, these interviews are conducted in the comfort of your home. Remember, this is STILL the first impression your potential employer is going to have of you. As Novelist Cynthia Ozick said,
"Two things remain irretrievable, time and a first impression"
The basics are often forgotten. These tips may seem obvious, but you would be surprised how often they are forgotten and brought up after the fact. So, stick with these basics to make sure you do not get passed up on before making it to the second round.
- Dress the part! Just because you are at home, does not mean you should dress casual. Look your best.
- Make sure you are in a quiet space. Background noise is not good for you or the interviewer.
- Make sure your backdrop is neat and clean. Your surroundings are a representation of you.
- Have your resume handy. Either digitally or hard copy.
- Test your interviewing platform prior. Make sure you are familiar with it before your interview. Do a test run with a friend or family member if you can.
- Always thank your interviewer for the opportunity.
Like many aspects in life, we forget about the basics. Slow down and remember the fundamentals and you will be on the right track. I hope this helps! Happy interviewing.
