In today's fast-paced world, remote live teaching has emerged as a game-changer, benefiting both learners and their employers. It not only saves time and costs associated with traveling but also contributes to a greener planet by reducing carbon emissions. Remote teaching is here to stay but it does not always have the best reputation. Some of us still insist they need them face-to-face in their L&D (Learning & Development program). I beg to differ. Remote teaching can work really well and if it fails it is because of bad implementation. How can we make remote teaching and learning super engaging and on par with learning in person?
Here are five effective strategies to make your remote live learning sessions engaging and memorable:
- Invest in the BEST equipment: To create a professional and immersive learning experience, equip yourself with high-quality tools. At MTI2, we have equipped our rooms with top-notch microphones, cameras, digital whiteboards, speakers, and more. Ensuring flawless connectivity through high-speed internet is essential. By going all the way, you demonstrate your commitment to providing an exceptional learning experience.
- CLARITY beats complexity: Delivering crystal-clear communication is essential. Use noise-canceling microphones with acoustic ceilings to eliminate interruptions. Secure high-speed internet lines to ensure uninterrupted connectivity. High-end speakers will enable you to hear participants loud and clear. Give tips to the learners regarding their equipment for an optimal experience. Utilize chat and collaborative tools like Mural to facilitate seamless interaction and gather valuable input.
- VARY interaction: Gone are the days of monotonous voice-over slides. Engage your learners through diverse inputs. Employ a mix of teaching methods, such as utilizing a traditional blackboard with live camera feeds and incorporating writing on top of slides. Draw participants into collaborative platforms like Mural to stimulate engagement with sticky notes and incorporate insights from the chat window. Aim to combine at least three different inputs to keep learners in the flow.
- SURPRISE me: Inject excitement into your sessions by introducing new and unexpected experiences. For example, explore green screen technology to project captivating backgrounds that go beyond the usual Zoom decor. Incorporate GoPro point-of-view (POV) experiences, engaging videos, or live experimentation with platforms like Mural or Miro. Even something as simple as an old-fashioned blackboard in a virtual setting can evoke nostalgia and a memorable authentic experience for participants.
- CONNECT: Create a genuine connection with your audience. Learn to look directly into the camera, conveying positive emotions effectively. In a digital setting, opening with music, smiling, and maintaining an energetic posture becomes even more crucial than in face-to-face training. Be prepared to invest extra energy into engaging learners. Encourage active participation by enforcing camera usage and fostering interaction. Continuously observe participants to identify opportunities for engagement, ask questions, and provide feedback. Embrace chat platforms and other forms of expression to facilitate open communication. Remember, it's easier to manage excessive interaction than to encourage it when it's lacking.
