"THE REMIX: HIP HOP X FASHION" on Netflix
Fashion has always been a showcase of identity, and much of the way we ‘dress’ today owes a stylistic debt to under-recognized Black artists/designers who created a complex array of iconic looks for Hip Hop legends. These image architects went on to change the entire fashion industry: Misa Hylton, April Walker, Dapper Dan, and Kerby Jean-Raymond.
THE REMIX: HIP HOP X FASHION explores the exploitation and appropriation of Black artistry, and how Re-Mixing, Re-Telling, Re-Contextualizing, and Re-Imagining have always been part of the Black experience in this country.
It was my privilege to work on this documentary as both Co-Executive Producer and Story Editor. I am indebted to the Directors, Lisa Cortes and Farah X; and Producer Hillary Cutter (Cutter Productions) for inviting me to this project. Working with such amazing women was remarkable.
I’m happy to say that after a year of critical acclaim and awards, THE REMIX is now streaming on Netflix. Hope you watch it.
