A reminder for us all
Watching the events unfold in the USA and across the world is a stark reminder that racial inequality and exclusion are still, unfortunately, truly global issues. And a reminder that we all have a role to play in moving the bar.
I've shared my thoughts on this topic with my UBS colleagues – you can read the message here.

Dear colleagues,
We all have been following the news in the US, and witnessing the protests now taking place around the world. Watching this unfold, I truly hope this becomes the pivot point of positive social change our society needs. It’s clear racial inequality and exclusion are still, unfortunately, truly global issues, and we have a long way to go before they are part of our history, instead of our present and our future.
Earlier this week, Tom Naratil, our President in the Americas region, addressed our US-based colleagues saying “Silence is not an option.” My Group Executive Board colleagues and I wholeheartedly agree. It also leads us to ask a question – what role can a global firm like UBS play?
First, I want to make clear we do not tolerate racism at UBS. This is a firm where everyone – regardless of ethnicity, gender, national origin, age, ability, sexual orientation or religion – should thrive, feel welcome and included, and contribute as a valuable part of our team. We also serve a diverse client base and partner with diverse suppliers and stakeholders, and they benefit from our inclusive mindset, too.
Second, focus on race and ethnicity is clearly included in our five global strategic Diversity & Inclusion priorities. As part of this, some of the things we're doing include investing in partnerships to help us tap into diverse talent pools, enabling our Mosaic employee networks and running reverse mentoring programs – and we also support marginalized groups through our community and philanthropic programs. And we are dedicated to continue this important focus.
Third, every single one of us has a role to play. My expectation of each of you is a commitment to foster an inclusive working environment, and speak up when you see something that goes against the grain of our culture and falls short of the high standards we have set for ourselves.
And, against the backdrop of these protests in the midst of a global pandemic that’s affecting us all, it’s more important than ever that we continue to show compassion, stand up for each other, and be a friend to and advocate for those in need.
Best,
Sergio
