September unemployment returned to July levels at 3.5%. We're continuing to hear of major and high-profile companies announce hiring slowdowns, freezes, cutbacks and layoffs. But the July and August BLS jobs report showed a surprising strength in jobs added, while September reported 37% lower than the 2022 average. This adds confusion to which direction the economy is headed.

This contrast is despite the slow increase of high profile layoffs and hiring slowdowns, over 30 leading indicators forecasting recession, while economist and CEO reports are showing increased probability (as much as an 90%?likelihood) of a recession in the first half of 2023.

This isn't a reversal of trends throwing us in a recession without any warning like 2008. Instead, consider this a warning, combined with a little more time to find your next job before hiring freezes and layoffs become widespread. It's going to happen ... just not yet.

But the jobs report is only a small part of the 2022 job market story. There are 2 other giant stories that are driving the job market now.

#1 - The Great Resignation continues to cause massive competition and job shortages for career/management/ executive positions. 90M-110M+ job seekers (50-65% of currently employed job seekers plus the unemployed) compete for 11M advertised jobs, or 10 competitors for each job. This is both an opportunity for you to find a safer or better position, but at the same time the massive competition makes a move more challenging - It's possible, but you've got do more to get it.

#2 - Many leading indicators of a recession are flashing red, warning of hiring slowdowns. In addition to slowly increasing layoffs, GDP estimates were showed the 2nd consecutive quarter of GDP losses. The Federal Reserve increased interest rates by .75% for the third month in a row and about to increase it again. Plus, there have been over 30 leading recession indicators warning of a downturn since April.

You need to act NOW to jump-start your job search before the job market slowdown turns to hiring freezes and widespread layoffs.

If your current job isn't all that stable,?your current boss doesn't love you, you'll be at risk in the next 6 months. If you're currently in a project position (rather than a mainline position), you'll be at risk. If you're in HR or recruiting, you'll be at risk. If your company is facing financial challenges, high costs, needs to sell/merge or secure VC/IPO funding to grow, you'll be at risk. This risk affects those who are top performers as well as people rated "needs improvement" and everyone in-between, even if your employer has suspended annual reviews.

This mass?competition?of today's job market and need to find a more secure position to ride out the storm affects you if you're currently employed, unemployed, over 40, searching for a raise/promotion/remote position, want a fast job search, changing careers/industries/locations. You're competing against many qualified candidates during a recovering job market.

(The worker shortages you've heard about are primarily concentrated in these types of jobs: restaurant/bar, low wage hourly, frontline manufacturing production, truck drivers, doctors and nurses. But those aren't the jobs you want, are they?)
