Remembrance

No tribute is sufficient on this first anniversary of the tragic loss of my invaluable teacher, best buddy and beloved son.

It is not parental hyperbole when I vow that I’ve never met anyone with Nicky’s demonstrated capacity for pervasive selfless love. This sentiment has been echoed by most who encountered him.

While his recognized high accomplishments are varied and numerous, Nicky’s innate and sincere compassion throughout his twenty years was his greatest signature trait.  Naturally, his friends promptly coined the declaration - LoveLikeNicky.

Nicky constantly adopted, collected and nurtured “projects” (his codeword for anyone in need of support); and, this was an extensive list that included old friends, new acquaintances and even strangers.  On a call from university, Nicky once confided to me that he felt such was the burden he was destined to bear.

The fitting inscription on the accompanying photo contains the last words he jotted into his bedside journal ("How do you want to be remembered?"). Thoughtful consideration of the query leads one to a meaningful and impactful existence.

I’ve now been told of others asking themselves “What would Nicky do?” when faced with challenging circumstances or dilemmas. I endeavor to follow the same, although too frequently come up well short of the mark.

Nicky’s last generous gifts live on in the form of four organ recipients - including the current custodian of his amazingly abundant heart.

This year of daily grief and tears is indescribable. However, the essential lessons of his unique and special life remain with me and many through eternity. For that, I can be considered fortunate.
