Remembrance Day 2023

Remembrance Day 2023

We recently had the honour of speaking to Telcom Deployment Manager and former member of the armed forces Gary Nutbeam

Gary shared with us insights into his military journey, from what inspired him to join and the transformative impact his service has had on his life.

Can you tell us a little bit as to why you went into the military and how long you served role??

Growing up, I was always aware that my grandfather had served during WW2, and my uncle had spent time in the forces during the 80s, so I’ve always had a slight interest in joining.?

I decided to join the military at the age of 19, as the company I was working for was experiencing financial difficulties, and there wasn't much work out there at the time. I pretty much decided that now was the time, and so I sold most of my belongings, and off I went to basic training!?

I ended up serving for 9 years as a Radio Operator within the Royal Logistic Corps.

How did you imagine military life before you joined? How did your perceptions change after serving??

Before joining, I imagined military life was driving around in tanks and shooting guns. I never realised that the Army also played a big role in humanitarian operations.?

During my time in the Army, I was attached to a Medical Regiment that was deployed to Kenya to deliver medical aid to hard-to-reach communities. This was a real eye-opener for me, and I quickly realised it wasn't all about war.

How do you think your time in the military affected you?

I think my time in the Army was mostly positive. Before joining, I didn't have much direction in life, and I would always look for an easy solution.?

The Army helped me realise that I am a capable person that can achieve great things. I've met some amazing people through serving whom I ordinarily wouldn't have met, and I am extremely grateful for the impact they have had on my life.

Is there anything you wish civilians understood about military service?

I wish there was a greater understanding of what the military offers outside of times of conflict, as this is what the press mostly reports on. Many personnel in the forces have day-to-day jobs working alongside the NHS and other government institutions.

Why do you think it's so important to commemorate Remembrance Day? Do you do anything in particular??

I think it's important to commemorate Remembrance Day to show appreciation for the sacrifices that have been made by so few for so many. For me, Remembrance Day isn't just about those who lost their lives on a battlefield but also for those who have supported the forces and the country. Each year, my fiance, myself, and our children attend the Remembrance service and parade at our local memorial garden.
