Remembering Rabindranath Tagore: Honouring His Life and Contributions to Literature

Bengali poet, author, philosopher, and polymath Rabindranath Tagore—also known as Gurudev—made enormous contributions to Indian literature, art, and culture. He was born to a well-known Bengali family on May 7, 1861, in Calcutta, India. His mother, Sarada Devi, was a devoted homemaker, while his father, Debendranath Tagore, was the head of the Bengali Brahmo Samaj, a reformist religious organisation.

Tagore had tutoring at home to begin his schooling, and he later attended a number of schools in Calcutta. He was a talented student who shown an early interest in poetry writing. When he was just sixteen years old, his first collection of poems, "Kabi Kahini" (Tale of a Poet), was released.

When Tagore penned "Gitanjali" (Song Offerings), a collection of poetry, in 1910 and translated it into English in 1912, his literary career took off. He became well-known across the world because to this novel, and in 1913 he was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

In addition to being a skilled writer, Tagore was also a talented musician, social reformer, and painter. He set up a school at Santiniketan that eventually evolved into Visva-Bharati University with the goal of fusing conventional Indian education with Western knowledge. His works and speeches supported the idea of universalism, which he held dear.
