I had the privilege of meeting Professor Dr. Bernd Hallier in Moscow, where he introduced me to several CEOs of global retailers. Despite his impressive professional background, I found him to be a very humble individual. Our relationship grew over time, and I had the opportunity to meet with him on multiple occasions in various countries. Additionally, I was fortunate enough to spend time with him and his family at their home in Rosrath, Germany.
Professor Bernd Hallier was born in Hamburg and pursued his education in economics at the University of Hamburg, earning both his MA and PhD degrees. He gained valuable international experience through internships in Turkey, Israel, South Africa, and Japan. His professional journey began in 1973 at Martin Brinkmann Cigarettes, where he focused on distribution analysis before transitioning to a sales management role in 1981. He later became the director of the Institute of Self-Service (ISB) in 1985 and played a key role in its merger with the Institute for Rationalization (RGH) to form the Deutsches Handelsinstitut (German Retail Institute) in 1988, which eventually evolved into the EHI Retail Institute.
Professor Hallier held various significant positions throughout his career, including Managing Director of the EHI Retail Institute and Chairman of the Advisory Board of EuroShop, the world's largest capital goods show in the retail sector. He also became a partner of ShopDesignRussia in Moscow and CRC Shanghai in China, among other roles. He was actively involved in numerous organizations and initiatives related to retail, economics, and education, demonstrating his commitment to advancing the field.
In recognition of his contributions, Professor Hallier was appointed as an honorary professor at Moscow University in 2003 and received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Economics Prague in 2011. His focus on retail network management, knowledge transfer, and education, particularly in Eastern Europe and later in Southeast Asia, had a significant impact on the industry.
Professor Hallier's collaboration with the scientific journal Marketing Science & Inspirations began in 2006, shortly after its founding. He joined the editorial board in 2011 and actively supported the journal's development, contributing several articles over the years. His dedication and expertise have left a lasting legacy in the field of retail and academia.
