Remembering That Parachute of Many Colors
This past weekend I attended Dick Bolles memorial service at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Some of you may have read a piece I posted when he died, just a few months ago, days after his 90th birthday.
I was lucky enough to have known Dick for a good three decades. He was a mentor, colleague, and friend.
At the memorial, there was a wonderful array of speakers including his two sons, his niece, his grandson, wife (wonderful Marci), clergy and a friend, Daniel Porot, who flew in from Paris for the service.
Here are some of the things that were said about Dick at the memorial:
"He was a mensa member who wrote a career book in a totally creative conversational tone."
"Wordsmith extraordinaire."
"Not a man to be ignored."
" A wide smile with a gigantic embrace!"
One of his sons recounted a story about the time he asked his Dad..."if you could be my age....what would you be doing?" Dick smiled and said only one word....MORE! The audience chuckled!
Here are some of Dick's comments that I'll remember in my own work:
"Find your way as a person so what you do is who you are."
"Each of us has the ability to touch lives of others and help them to live, laugh and live....more fully."
"Let's not fit people into uncomfortable boxes, it's not just finding a job....it's finding yourself."
"People need options!"
A wonderful remembrance of a great man!
