Today, I honor my son Donovan, who passed away 9 years ago. Through this article, I want to share what he meant to me, not just as a son but as one of my wisest teachers.
Donovan was wise beyond his 23 years, offering insights and perspectives that could only be seen as profound to me. Whether it was discussing the latest trends in technology or the simplest ways to enhance our daily lives to how to handle life’s challenges and adversities, he engaged in conversations with an effectiveness and persuasiveness that belied his age. Kind, selfless, bold, and wise—Donovan was all these things and more, even up to his last day at the “old age of 23,†as he would jokingly say.
Our shared passion for business, technology, innovation, and the selfless act of putting others first were the foundation of many discussions. Our last conversation was particularly impactful; we talked about setting goals, crushing them, and breaking the glass ceilings to reach back and help others on our way up. He spoke about ensuring our family’s success—reminding me that family isn’t always defined by blood but by love.
He encouraged me to follow my dreams with a simple, potent phrase: “Don’t try; get it done. Btw Dad you told me that when I was 12 struggling in school†As I shared my aspiration to one day be a CEO, whether of a corporate entity or my own venture, he supported me unequivocally. He warned me of the rejections to come but reassured me that it only takes one brave soul to take a chance on you, and you should never let them regret it. “Be humble and teachable,†he advised, “no matter how many degrees you have or what you know.â€
Before we ended our call, he added, “Dad, work for a cool startup that helps people and saves lives, write your name in that history, and let that be part of your legacy.†I’m still working towards that, updating my skills in cloud computing and machine learning, aiming to bridge healthcare and technology—particularly mental health—to create access and opportunity for his generation and beyond.

So, to all parents out there, if you ever need real wisdom, insights, and perspective, talk to your kids or find a little kid to chat with. Trust me, it works. In the end, it won’t matter how many cars I own, how many titles and degrees I hold, or how many homes I own. What will matter most is that I made a difference in the life of a little kid, starting with my own.
I am honored to say that I am living up to that promise and ideal.
Until that Day…. Love Always Dad.
