Remembering General Colin L. Powell
On behalf of the leadership of The Executive Leadership Council, we are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of one of America’s most accomplished diplomatic and military heroes, General Colin L. Powell. The former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff received The Executive Leadership Council’s Alvaro L. Martins Heritage Award in 2009 for his significant lifetime contributions toward supporting the achievement of Black individuals.
General Powell was a gracious leader of conviction, an outstanding role model for future leaders and a staunch advocate for today’s youth. As founder and chairman of America's Promise – The Alliance for Youth, he believed in the power and potential of today’s youth and was committed to instilling the importance of character development and competence in young people. He successfully navigated the corporate board journey, landing seats on the Salesforce and Revolution Health boards. He was so much to so many people. To me, he was a true hero and the epitome of “Black Excellence” personified. He will be sorely missed.
