Remembering Gale Sayers

What makes a life well-lived? No matter the definition employed, my dear friend Gale Sayers certainly met it during his 77 years with us on this Earth.

Gale meant so much—to so many people and communities—that any attempt to construct even a partial reflection of that meaning here is a fool’s errand. Nonetheless, I will contribute a few fond memories of how our lives intersected to his remembrance.

Gale’s career, passions and contributions ran the gamut: from football to business to philanthropic causes. I was fortunate enough to work with Gale during his tenure on the American Century Investments Mutual Fund Board, from 2000-2010. He was unwavering in his commitment to our investors. Doing the right thing by them was always top of mind for him. His strong moral compass and integrity made him a model for all directors, and his affable demeanor and ready smile made even a long day of board meetings enjoyable.

Gale’s generosity also stands out in my memories. In just one example, I had to ask him for a favor back in 2009. I asked whether he might be willing to speak to our managers about five people in his life who charted their own courses and were living testaments to the idea that a person can accomplish just about anything through a combination of perseverance, teamwork and determination. Unsurprisingly, he agreed, and I am still inspired and amused by the stories and anecdotes he contributed about Buddy Young, Dick Butkus, George Halas, Brian Piccolo and Lamar Hunt. What an amazing life Gale led.  

Gale is an inspiration to all who strive to be their best. May he rest in peace, and may each of us learn from his example.
