Remembering Boston's Culinary Legend, Jasper White

Jim Koch recalls the impact of Boston's late chef and restaurateur
It was April, 1985. A mutual friend had tipped off Jasper White that I wanted his restaurant to be among the first to introduce Samuel Adams. Jasper’s was hands down the hottest restaurant in Boston, so if he felt my beer was good enough to serve, I knew others would also. ?It might have been my fastest sales call ever. He said he’d be glad to carry ?my beer and happy for us to tell folks that he was on board with us. His endorsement was monumental.
From that day on, he kept Samuel Adams on his bar both at Jasper’s and the Summer Shack. We hosted events and celebrations there over the years, including a fun oyster and beer shucking contest. The same friend who tipped Jasper off in 1985, took this photo of Jasper, my business partner Rhonda Kallman, and me at the closing night party at Jasper’s Restaurant after an incredible ten-year run.? Jasper’s loyalty was legendary.
Jasper White brought national attention, credibility, and respect to the Boston restaurant scene and to New England cuisine. He generously supported countless up-and-coming chefs and as well as entrepreneurial food, beer and wine purveyors. ?All of us at Boston Beer mourn his passing, and we raise a glass to a happy life, well-lived with generosity and kindness. Thank you, Jasper.
