Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day

Remembering-always

Memorial Day (previously, but now seldom, called Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday is now observed on the last Monday of May, having been observed on May 30 from 1868 to 1970.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day to honor and mourn those who died while serving in the U.S. Military. Many volunteers place an American flag on graves of military personnel in national cemeteries.

On Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.

The 31st annual National Memorial Day Concert is taking on a different form this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The concert, which is traditionally held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, will not be held this year. Instead, a special presentation on PBS will mix in memorable moments from previous concerts, along with new performances and tributes filmed from around the nation.

The concert special will air on Sunday, May 24, at 8 p.m. ET on PBS. It will also be available to live-stream PBS.org, along with PBS' YouTube and Facebook pages. The show will be watchable via video on demand from May 24 to June 7.
