Atlanta was in its fourth Fall Classic in the past six years. The Braves had won Game 1 of that World Series by 11 runs, the worst defeat the Yankees had suffered to that point in 187 Series games. Greg Maddux shut them out on 82 pitches in Game 2, the first time the Yankees had been blanked in 65 Series games.
