Remember Who You Are, Not Just What You Do

Remember Who You Are, Not Just What You Do

In the hustle of job searching, it's easy to get wrapped up in titles, roles, and tasks. But as Toni Morrison beautifully reminds us:

"You are not the work you do; you are the person you are."

This quote speaks volumes, especially when you're in between jobs or searching for the next step in your career. It’s a powerful reminder that your worth isn’t tied to your current job title, resume, or what you accomplish in a workday.

Here are a few key takeaways to reflect on as you navigate your job search:

1. Your Identity Is More Than a Job Title

Your skills, passions, and values are a reflection of who you are. Your job is an extension of that, but it doesn’t define your entire identity. Embrace your unique qualities, and remember that employers are hiring you, not just your skillset.

2. Focus on Personal Growth

Whether you're employed, between jobs, or exploring new fields, it's important to keep learning and growing. Personal development—be it through new hobbies, learning opportunities, or self-care—is just as valuable as professional achievements.

3. Align with Roles that Fit YOU

During your job search, prioritize roles and organizations that align with your values and who you are at your core. A job that resonates with your personal beliefs and aspirations will bring you more fulfillment in the long run.

4. Trust the Journey

If you're feeling frustrated or uncertain, know that every step, whether forward or sideways, is part of your career journey. Celebrate your strengths and remember that you are more than your resume.

As you continue your job search, keep this wisdom close to heart. You're not just seeking a paycheck or a title—you’re seeking a role that complements the unique person you are.

Take Action: This week, take time to reflect on who you are beyond your work. Ask yourself what you value most, what you're passionate about, and what kind of environment will help you thrive.

One of my strengths outside of work - I'm a huge outdoors person! This makes me adaptable, tenacious and nimble. There's nothing like doing a 21-mile day backpacking and then it starts thunderstorming, and you've just got to roll with the punches... You're right, it's easy to feel like your value is tied to what you do for work. The problem with this is that when you are laid off, then you are questioning who you are and what you bring to the table. It's a tricky place to be and one that I've been working on overcoming for some time. But it is possible.
