Remember Who It’s About

In this world of “dog eat dog”, “gaining the leg up”, as the title of Adam Grant’s fantastic book suggests “Give and Take”, it is so easy to think about, “What’s in it for us?”, or, “How will this help my bottom line?”

But then, after you take a step back from the chaos for a moment, you can’t help but ask: who is it really about?

When we were young, many of us were taught the moral lessons that the “world does not revolve around us” and that “we shall treat others as we would want to be treated”.

But when so much is on the line as we grow older (bills, kids, expenses, investments, purchases, lack of time, etc.), we tend to follow the opposite.

Following timeless values brings timeless value though.

Give that extra dollar to charity, spend time with important people, and think less about yourself, but more about those around you.

I say this not with virtue signaling in mind as well, as I am not any bit perfect at this one bit, but when you remember the term “Memento Mori” (“remember we will die”), it puts things the long game in perspective.

Yes, your bottom line may be slightly sacrificed if you lean more in this direction, but will it matter when you are 6 feet under?

Something to consider…
