As we eagerly wait for the 2017 Nordic Business Forum, here are my #visualnotes from last year's speeches. Enjoy.
Let's start with my favourite: amazing Ed Catmull.
For me the most memorable wisdom of his talk was the role of the leader. His/her ability to listen to the weak signals, find the "backchannel info", to remove the blocks that hinder creativity to blossom and to protect the people who say out loud the first, sensitive ideas. As Simon Sinek said in NBF2015: the main goal of the leader is to create "safe spaces" or "braintrusts" as Ed puts it.
Next up: the energetic and frank Gary V.
Actually one of the main messages I got from him was really practical: the underappriciation of Facebook ads (which led me to use them more). Also the idea of mobilephones being the "new TV" was useful metaphor. Also it was so soothing to hear him too repeat the message of authenticity: be who you are, be real because the technology will expose our true identity.
Seth Godin - he was great.
I really enjoyed Seth's style of "teaching" and he really loaded us with visuals & knowledge. I really loved how he encouraged us to be our "crazy selves": see the new, make art (instead copying), dance with fear, do something brave and embrace the imperfect.
Then: As a huge Singularity fan, it was great to hear Peter Diamandis live.
Exponential is the key thing here. We are blind to the new things because we forget the exponential aspect of things (and think everything is just linear): like DNS sequencing, electric cards (like Tesla's growth).
Amy Chua and her wisdom of performance.
Author of Tiger mom presented a theory for work-success drive which included the triple package of superiority complex, insecurity and impulse control. For me this represents little bit "the old way" and I prefer Ed's & Seth's creative, more holistic approach to performance.
Last but not least: Scott Galloway.
He talked about the role of giants and disruptors: Amazon, Facebook, Netflix and Google - a modern man's God. And of course the social media and how user's role change to content creators and trendsetters.
See you 2.-3.10 at NBF2017 @Helsinki!
