Remember what RGW said...

Remember what Richard Grant White said: "English is an almost grammarless language." So why is the world of English language learning drowning in grammar? And is there a way to escape that flood?

Richard Grant White died on 8 April 1885. Since then, how many books, methods and courses have appeared about English grammar? And have they made life easier for teachers and learners?

If English is indeed almost grammarless - which it certainly is in comparison to, for instance, Spanish or French or German - then why is so much time and effort spent (and wasted) on grammar?

Less is more

Of course, without grammar, you can't say much, even if you have all the words. So some grammar is essential for learners. But if just a little grammar is helpful, does that mean that lots and lots of grammar are even more so? No, of course not. LESS is more!

What really matters is the essential structure that sets English apart from other languages. After all, those differences matter most in language learning, not the similarities. And what sets English apart are its word order and its tenses.

Just imagine...

So what if you could get those essentials across with only One Rule - to rule them all? What would that mean for you - or your students? What would it bring? Less stress and less frustration. More time for real language and serious fun. Just imagine what it'd be like...

It's all possible with the One Rule because English is an almost grammarless language. Less is more!

I think grammar plays a critical role in constructing sentences and conveying meaning in English. A solid understanding of grammar can help speakers and writers communicate more accurately...

Seriously ? Compare it with French for just two seconds : no ??modes?? no ??conjugaisons??… and all the stuff that French has and that doesn’t exist in English. How many ??temps?? does French have ? (No I don’t want to count); how many in English ? Last time I checked : 12. 3 groups of verbs in French, with each its own conjuging style… beside irregular verbs, there is no such thing in English. All Latin languages have a hill of grammar to learn, but blessed be English, it’s also a Saxon language, so less grammar, rules can somehow be followed… all my French students agree on that: blessed be English, not as much grammar as French to be learnt ! ??
